Specials on upgrading to PT HD?
Hi all,
With Avid offering up to 54% off to buy into the HD pedigree I have been thinking more about the move.
I see that in the US certain stores are have a deal whereby if you buy the Pro Tools|HD2 Accel for example they will throw in a 192 I/O for free - on top of the discounted price. Vintage King for instance are still doing this I believe.
Does anyone know of any such deals in Australia?
Cheers,
David

your HD system is always about to become obsolete. all systems are always about to become obsolete!
i noticed that there are some pretty big price drops on euphonix gear too. i would assume that avid is about to start rebranding all that stuff and wants to get rid of remaining stocks with digidiesign, euphonix and probably M-Audio badges on them. so some good deals to be had.
on the other hand.... think how cheap a used HD system will be in a few months time.

If you can make money from HD specifically the next few months might be interesting.
For myself I went for Logic.
The last time I used it was about 7 years ago, but Apple still had a much cheaper upgrade path for me.
I was impressed with the great value for money.
I've never thought about Pro Tools and value for money in the same moment.

What is FPGA? Yeah, speculation is all I can find, though from Avid's site they don't mention moving away from HD despite some speculation of a hybrid system which probably will end at the rumour mill. If it's just a re-badging, then the price is probably worth it. If it's a whole new product line, that's a different story. But when much of the planet uses PTHD in the professional arena I'm sure they wouldn't want to offside them all by putting some kind of phase-out plan out there. It's strange that no one is categorically saying what's around the corner. Or are they?
hmmm...

FPGA - field programmable gate array - very basic decription is a circuit that can be reconfigured after the fact by the user. Or, to take it a step further, can be reprogrammed by itself in realtime, so it can sort of change itself to adapt to whatever process it is required to complete. FPGA is what the Fairlight CC1 card uses. YOu have tthe ability to allocate various percentages of total processor power to either video or audio depending on the work you do and your needs.
There are also hybrid systems emerging that combine FPGA's and other components on one chip, althugh I don't fully understand this side of it.

I recently (or stupidly) went to HD as Core cards are getting cheaper by the day. There a few ebay stores that regularly have PT stuff. But for me i already had a G5 (another time bomb) and convertors. Trading in 002/003 doesn't seem to make sense when you can buy nearly new for much less.

...........there has been a bit of chatter over recent months that there are quite a few unhappy campers at Digidesign and that there has been a brain drain as some top programmers have jumped ship. Also talk of cash flow problems etc ......apparently it's not the software or the hardware that's unstable .........more like instability in the corporate boardroom.

I believe the Mix Systems are now considered "legacy" products.... discontinued, so, no support.

heh... while I'm all for good competition, and I definitely think Digi....sorry, Avid... needs some incentive to innovate, I wouldn't hold your breath for the new standard becoming Cubase/Nuendo. As much as it would personally annoy me, it'd most likely be Logic, no?
That said, who knows... I suppose stranger things have happened.
(I know your post was probably meant facetiously - was still an interesting thought though)
:)

Yeah was more of a tongue in cheek comment though still half serious. I just prefer the way it works, that being said Samplitude and Reaper are great too, though the midi setup in Cubase just makes sense to me and is very easy to get everything working, mostly.
