isn't life great! this is why personal relationships (in my opinion) are worth more than contracts. and they cost less!! keep the relationships solid, do the right thing, don't screw anyone over, maintain integrity, always give 100% and you'll always be paid!!

i think this will fix your woes and give you a better perspective

beer
girl
cool car
time

you can mix them up in any order you like as long as you come away feeling better:)

i got fired fired from a production once because the band thought i wasnt good enough for them and they spent the album money on a overseas guy to produce just two tracks ! and .. well just about everything else that happened in your tale happened to me..twice

20 years later i drove through the local drive through bottle shop with my beautiful wife in my just painted and beautifully restored and i mean absolutley stomping metallic candy apple red 64 futura , my wife gets out to buy some stuff and i see the guy at the counter checking her and the car out ... on closer inspection i see its my long lost " rock star" serving her at the counter of the bottlo
i jump out a "help" her with bottles.
look up and say "oh hey pauly how you doing ..?"

pauly is working on some demos ( and at the bottlo..) of the "new" stuff and looking for a drummer right now
he is going to send me some stuff because he thinks i would really like to hear it :)

dont sweat it miles , you must have made some mistakes somewhere to end up where you are ,
its no big deal in the fullness of time.

i think the key to this business in the long haul is not to make the same mistakes twice ..
err i keep finding new ones
and dont hang on to the pain of dickweed clients , life will sort them out .. take the high road etc etc

i think i have run out of cliches for this post

i might sum up by saying

i got a fork lift the other day .. i dont know what i was thinking for the last 25 years
if you have always have heavy stuff in your life
get a fork lift !

i just mentioned the maya convertor to her and she said "why would someone do that, why didnt he just buy a nice record player and plug it into some good speakers?" i shook my head and just said "baby, i love you but you know ima be spending some serious money on gear next year."

if looks could kill....

Anyway, back to the topic at hand.

"The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side."

Myles, take the deep breaths like the sages say, and thank your lucky stars your other clients respect you... what do one lot of fuckheads matter?

and hey! you're making a living doing what you love - the sky's not blue every day mate :) (Queenslanders shutup!)

And - I read your name on some artist's website the other day saying about Myles Mumford the recording and mixing guru and how wonderful you are... that's gotta worth something...

Relax...

Thanks Graeme, I know what you say about the other people I work with is true. I've got more work than I can shake a stick at and all with good artists who want to work with me because they respect me and the work I do.

I guess my frustration is with clients who become friends who then treat you like you're worthless. Like I begged to work with them and what a privilege to be in their shadow. And I guess also the question is how do we go about negotiating the career path with as few of these as possible. I've worked in the industry for 10 years, freelance and making a living playing, composing, producing and recording and I've had my fair share of fallouts, screw overs, rip offs, people who don't pay etc. I'm much better at picking who I work with but I still don't know how to protect myself from being taken advantage of. I like the idea of contracts but I don't like the idea of having an exciting chat about a project and then whipping out a contract to lock it in. sounds very draconian to me.

At then end of the day, I'm proud of my reputation, my work and I like and respect who I get to work with. I just hate being taken advantage of.

thoughts?

and also, for the record they are not fuckheads. I actually enjoyed working with them, I enjoyed the material we were creating and I wanted to be a part of the project.

I just don't get it....

If anyone out there in Turtlerockia can get hold of a copy of an article called "Good guys finish first" it has some amazing insights.

It all started from game theory around a puzzle called The Prisoner's Dilemma, and how a very simple strategy was found to win.

The long and short of it is to see life as the sum of a set of relationships, in some of which yes, you find yourself getting screwed. As Rick says, learn from it but move on. And above all, understand that the one (or more) relationship in which you got screwed is more than made up for by the relationships that work.

Oh, and get that $50 a week thing in writing ...... a gentle but steady income stream can be useful.

That's weird Rick because I got woken up at 5AM this morning by some guy hooning around our street on a forklift. Dunno what he was doing but it was bloody noisy.

Weiss Maya or 2009 Porsche 911 Carrera, ha that would be an easy one if I had the spare cash. Dunno how many exceptionally attractive women you could pull with the Maya but the Porsche would be great. Especially if you get one of those pussy magnet things installed. :)

Are you suggesting a whiskey suppository? Not sure that will fix the producer blues but it might create a few new ones!

After getting over the initial shock it could give a nice warm feeling inside. :) I prefer the traditional method though of "drinking" grog.

Bro Town is pretty cool, did you see the episode when the South Africans moved in? Left me shaking my head a bit. :)
