HI guys. I'm mixing OTB through 16/24 channels
of Apogee Rosetta conversion. Until now, I have been printing mixes
back into the main DAW through the same converters.
I have spoken to some guys using separate computers + interface to mixdown to, apparently with improved results. (Separate clocks for playback and printing back)
Do any of you do this? What are you using equipment wise?
Should I go this route, or not worry about it.

i love doing it that way
and always have
im not sure if i could document specific or real audio advantages, but the workflow wins for me.

some things to consider
- you can use different/ more specific stereo converter for the bus
- you can print mix and any sample rate/ word size (or multiple different ones) not limited by session
- all you stereo mixes are archived/ saved in one place, which works for me - "finished" projects are somewhere else than hours and hours of multitrack

Exactly my thoughts on the first 2 points and the 3rd one is a great one too.
What are you using for your mixdown machine, gareth?

Yep I do it that way.
UA Apollo 16 into analogue desk into UA Apollo duo, via (sometimes) a SSL clone buss compressor into Wavelab.
I don't like In The Box mixes and I can use my external reverbs and delays.
I'm just old and old fashioned, but I love my Abbey Road and UA plugs and automate in the box, best of both worlds

the master output of the neve goes over to the "stereo rack" which is
BC2 buss comp (which i use like a limiter but with the parallel function, to take off some of the really peaky stuff)
Avalon 747 (which i love the sound of but doesnt react well to very fast transients - hence the above)
Apogee PSX100SE (special edition analogue circuitry, 96k upgrade)
AES out into Mboxpro3
macpro 4.1 running PT11

my normal workflow is to record all the mixes (including instrumentals etc) into a pro tools session (artist/ album name) from there i can bounce out listen copies at 44/16 or Mp3, but i take the whole session (24/96) to mastering.

insert all outboard on separate tracks and master buss processing via ssl inserts and was planning to just send
the ssl mix outs into a separate print daw.
I currently run an ancient version of Wabelab (6)
On my main daw (win xp) but would like to install that on this "new" mixdown machine.
I loved 747 on master buss when I owned it, and wanted to actually get one again pretty soon.
Eq is very nice. I currently have Great river stereo eq and buz audio soc 1.1 on there.
So, I think I'll be hunting down an old-ish computer and a nice sounding adda.
Any ideas/recommendations or maybe you know someone selling something suitable..

A few ideas for AD/DA depending on your budget, roughly from most expensive to cheapest

Always top notch conversion but not cheap.

New kid on the block - Same ADC as UH-7000 (PCM4222) See below
Mytek AD192
Under rated, can be found 2nd hand for very decent price.
Ta@#$% UH-7000
Almost too cheap to be taken seriously but uses very high spec ADC and looks to be implemented very well.

Lots of choices ATM.

or ive got an apogee PSX100 spare that i can be convinced to sell (since i upgraded to the SE)
certainly a fine converter! (and clock)
you can get the rosettas and other apogees pretty cheap these days too if you dont need high sample rates

I'm leaning towards getting a Rosetta 200 192k for the mixdown and hopefully hook it up to an inexpensive, quiet and stable computer..

I used to have a Rosetta 800 as my outputs and returns for my outboard gear on my main DAW via lightpipe and a Rosetta 200 connected via firewire on my 2nd computer for mixing down. I also had the same Rosetta 200 connecting back to my main DAW via the lightpipes for an extra 2 channels if needed, so in essence the Rosetta 200 could run with either computer with minimum fuss.

The WC were daisy chained from the 800. Though the Rosetta 200 was clocked independantly from it's own clock when using it for mixdown or clocked from the 800 when using it combined with the 800.

All lightpipes were connected to a HDSP96/52. It worked flawlessly.

Yep, I've got my rosettas hooked into the 9652 and are rock solid together..
I have a spare X-FW card in one of the Rosettas, so a Ros 200 seems like a no brainer via FW inbto a separate puter...
