Don't buy a drobo !!

Drobo has the most insanely stupid drive setup I have ever seen.

It will only make volumes in 16TB chunks. Not bigger, Not smaller. 16 TB volumes only.

If you have a 1 TB drive in there, your OS will see a 16TB volume.

If you have 5 x 6 TB drives (21.78 TB after Raid) the OS will see two 16TB volumes.

Here's the kicker though, if you only have 21.78 TB of actual space, even though your OS sees 32 TB of space, if you try and copy more than 21.78 TB, everything on the unit gets totally corrupted, and there's no way to get it back.

Drobo's solution is to always check the actual used capacity in their app, and not to rely on the OS at all - which is bloody impossible when you are trying to talk through it with a producer thousands of km away.

Only reason we bought it is that the producers machine doesn't have thunderbolt, and this was the only big raid that we could find that had USB 3.

NEVER AGAIN !!!

Edit - there are also some lights that change colour when it fills up, but still too difficult to explain to a producer...
