FET condensor for vocals

No mic does everything, no vox mic will suit all singers, and it is best to audition mics with your own ears.

Having got the wisdom of the ages out of the way, I am in the market for a good FET LDC for vocals, up to $2K. Think of the space ranging from Ben's Beezneez Elly up to say a Gefell M930. A used Neumann would be in the picture as well.

Definitely after 'accurate neutral" rather than to "sparkling boosted". I already have a nice pair of tube mics, a couple of hyped FETs, and pretty much have the dynamics covered as well.

What are your "go to" mics in this situation?

Of course, all bets are off if Rick can provide me with a nice cmv563 for the money :-bd

Here's a real microphone. The seller is also very good and trustworthy.

u89 is great and I love mine. Also the um70 and the m930 gefells are excellent choices.

Well, he says coughing shyly, they are older SM Pro MC03's (ver. 1) modded by Joe Malone - so they were far from expensive!

I have AB'd the (modded) MC03 against tube mics with an extra 0 on the end of the price I paid, and would say the result is of the same quality in terms of noise floor, headroom, bandwidth, sensitivity, frequency response - all the numbers bits - but sonicly they have their own signature. Distinctly tube 'big warm' without being gooey or muddy, but not neutral by any stretch of the imagination. You'd not mistake it for anything but a tube.

The JLM mod (which I understand SM Pro has acquired and is now standard out of the box) is a switched impedance mode activated by phantom power, so you sort of get 2 mics (a vintage low mids sound and a more modern high mids sound) in one.

I have a pair of these and am thinking of buying a 3rd:

Great on Harsh/Nazal Boys, Female vox, amazing Kick Out, Glyn Johns Overheads, Bass Amp and percussion... and pretty cheap.

It's pretty similar to a u47 FET. Can take High SPL and has switchable patterns.

I suggest the Lewitt 640 is worth a shot.

Thanks for the input everyone.

I could not pass up the chance at a Neumann purple badge TLM170 from a fellow Trocker - fits the brief to a T - and have the Sony C38B down for future reference. A new mic that didn't get a mention but which came up in my research is the Soyuz SU-19 FET - it looks nice but by reports has (good) colour rather than the neutrality I was looking for.
