Anyone hand some experience with m88 v RE 20 v SM7 for a kick in? Thoughts?

use the RE20 all the time, I have an original M88 which I use for more of a vintage sound.

Both are fantastic and if I was less worried about the Capsule in the M88 I'd use it more.

If you can find an Original M88 not the M88 TG.

Haven't used a SM7 and probably wouldn't

apples & oranges... but.... I found the M88 meatier vs the RE320 bigger set flat / brighter set with rolloff

i love an M88 but use it for kick OUT.
i know im a live guy at heart... but i still love a 91 kick in.

I'm back on the D112 after being through nearly every kick mic on the planet.

Have found the trick is to actually get it 'IN' the kick.

I usually end up with it in the front half of the inside of the drum, closest to the beater.

The D112 is great because of it's ergonomics as you can set it on a low stand in a regular clip and once inside the drum it sort of stands up and can face the beater, similar to the stance of a cobra ready to bite.

Of course there are many occasions where you don't want this kind of sound, this is mainly for modern pop/rock/metal kind of drums.

M88 is one of my fav mics.

60s (silver): nice mid presence, freaks out a bit on super loud kick in duty, the best one for me on voice

70s (silver grille, black body): similar mid presence, freaks out only occasionally on super loud kick in duty, best for me on bass amps)

TG (all black, brand new): less mid presence, way more low extension, I love it on kick in and never freaks out.

RE-20 sometimes wins, but to my ear feels more thumpy and old school

old white Sennhesier 421 (I especially like the 421 N, with no filter circuit) often beats both, but is more modern with a 5khz electronic kind of presence...

SM7 very punchy, sometimes works.

I always use some kind of transformless kick out too, my favourite being the Voxorama m36.

The AKG D12 is the mic I use a lot on kik, inside or out. It's a great mic. Also the Beyer M88 for a bit more of a solid sound has been a go to mic for years...... I will sometimes use a chinese fet, the Studio Projects C1 if Im after that sound.

Hi, 90% of the time for recording it's an Re 20 for me. Next favourite is the D12 (don't like the D112 for some reason) then MD421 but not the newer ones. Occasionally an EV666 or 635a, but that's for really stylised stuff.
For live to air broadcasts at PBS in Studio 5, I'll use an EV Re 320. ALMOST as nice as the Re20, but a lot louder and a fair bit brighter. Also cheaper...
I used to quite like the Shure Beta 52 but I haven't used one for years, don't know of I'd still like them.
