Just yesterday I put a Samsung T5 500GB USB 3 external drive on my 2013 3.2G iMac
I cloned the system drive, and made the SSD the boot drive...
Man, did it make a huge difference!!
The iMac is just flying.. boot time, apps, I would never have thought the internal spinning HD was such a bottleneck as it was
The drive cost me 299 and is certainly a great performance increase
worth thinking about, vs upgrading.

Add another for your non-volatile data and you'll have twice the smile - it's a great way to extend the life of an older computer.
