Hi chaps, looking at getting a VCA compressor and have been looking at the Serpant SB4001. Anyone had any experience with them? Is it worth getting the SSL 500 series G comp or the SB 4001?....
cheers

I would try a few out wherever you can. Definitely audition a TK BC1-S, great bang for buck. I would prefer that to a 500 module but I've never gone with the 500 thing so am prejudiced in that regard.

I haven't heard the ones you mentioned there but I use my Smart C1 every single day. Really love that thing.

The TK is very much along the lines of Al Smart's comp.

I haven’t tried the others but I have used the al smart c1 a few times and that is great. I bought the ssl 500 g comp a while back and I love it. It’s a very versatile piece without lacking quality and I find gear like that is valuable. I don’t know how the 4001 sounds or what it costs but it looks feature rich. Thumbs up for the SSL but if you get to ab them let us know.

Re: SSL G Comp Thoughts
Dramastic Obsidian is the best SSL-style comp I've ever heard. C1 is great also though.
That said, I've never been a massive fan of the actual SSL ones, so YMMV.

Re: SSL G Comp Thoughts
Been using the Smart C1LA for a few years happily. Seems to have the C1 tone plus some extra features and it's 500 series. The DC Stereo Link option seems to be halfway between the kinda smeared Stereo mode on the C1 and the dual mono (unlinked) option... also of note is that if you contact Mr Smart he will add an output transformer for you. A friend of mine has a Sowter in there and says it makes it even better...

SO what are your thoughts on the now obtained Serpent Audio SSL comp?
Was it what you were after?
