Bryston 4B St help.

Postby Lee » Thu May 31, 2018 5:01 pm

I have the opportunity to buy a Bryston 4B st power amplifier but apparently one channel isn’t working.
I’m aware they have a 20 year warranty but they need to be sent back to Canada. I’m not sure how much it would cost to send back yet but I’m trying to decide wether i could get it repaired here cheaper. I’m not sure if I’m going to buy it and then have a tech say they can’t fix it or parts are really expensive. Has anyone here been through this process with the company or are there any techs that have worked on these that can advise what I should do? Cheers guys.

If you can manage to obtain the schematics or service manual you might find a local tech that will take it on.

Barney Loveland (with help from his mate Gavin) rebuilt my 4BST, so he knows the inside of it pretty well.

Technical Workshops here in Melbourne used to do warranty work for Bryston I think? Well, in theory at least... I remember chatting to one of the techs there about the 20 year warranty, he said he'd never actually seen or heard of one coming in for repair (mine blew up through sheer carelessness).

Still the best sounding amp I've ever heard.

Oh and I have schematics, although I imagine they are available online.

Thank you Steve and Wez for the reply. if it’s no trouble to send me the schematics that would be greatly appreciated. Then I could show a tech I know here to get an idea. Did you need to buy parts and if so was it easily available? I would rather get it sorted here if I can.

Thanks Wes.

No probs Lee, will do.

I can't remember what parts it needed but there wasn't any trouble sourcing anything as far as I recall. I don't think there's any voodoo or magic secret sauce in a Bryston - just exceptional design, great build and quality components.

What I would want to know though is what caused the channel to fail in the first place, as it's pretty unusual.

So I decided to buy the Bryston 4bST amp and the ceramic fuses have arrived. So now I’m ready to find a tech preferably in Sydney who would be suitable to repair the sad channel. Is there someone here that would help me out?
I got some ns10m speakers and really want to hear the combo:)

I took one of my Bryston amps to a dealer in Sydney several years ago (who are no longer the Aus rep) and they honoured the warranty and fixed it. Have you tried these guys:

Hi Al I looked into the warranty Avenue and contacted the current distributor and they didn’t have any interest in answering my questions about the fuses so I just went to Kimil Electronics and he fixed it. It was expensive but it’s working so now I can just crack on with listening to music:) it sounds awesome!
