hey all

shopping for a high end voice channel, with a pre and a comp (eq optional). we've got all the usual suspects on the list (UA, Avalon, Millennia, Pendulum etc etc)... but since i'm a bit out of touch with tracking toys, have we missed anything obvious, or not-so-obvious? i want to consider all the options before we plonk down the cash.

so if money was no object, what else should i be looking at? the brief is for a super classy, go-to pre with serious 'wow' factor. leaning towards character over clean (we've got 64 channels of 'clean').

come on, help me spend the boss's money ;-)

I'd get a V72 modified by gunter. hands down the best pre i've ever heard. thick and glassy, crystal clear but warm and charming.

my favourite acoustic guitar combination now is C42 into a V72. favourite vocal combination is U47 -> V72 -> SSL comp.

can't believe what it does to acoustic guitar and vocals. worth every cent.

Does it have to be a channel strip.
A Great River NV1 is a nice pre.
Add to that nice outbaord comp and off you go.
Or buy a Neve 1073,1084 or 1081 classic pre/eq.
Or one of the clones or the new reissues.
Or the new Rupert Neve pre?
Or a Groove tubes Vipre?

Others to think off in channel strips not mentioned.
Would be the Buzz Audio channelstrip.

Actually, that's a good call. The Groove Tubes Glory Comp is apparently the shizzle.

Maybe some Brent Averill units? Vintech? Phoenix?

there's some beauties listed in "Tape Op" if you get that wonderful mag. but i dunno about getting that boutique stuff sent accross the pond. you've checked out the mixmasters guys on frontendaudio.com.au ? GML and chandler. mmmm.

hey has anybody tried the Joe Malone Mic Pre kits. They seem pretty cheep to build.

yeah those JLM kits certainly have a good rep on the prodigy diy forum.

and they do built equipment also - like the TMP8 http://www.jlmaudio.com/8packoftrans.htm

again, roolly good, by all reports.
