At Jungle we have a pretty decent size live room, that can sound VERY live if needed.

Hey Owen - your place looks nice, roughly what size is the main room?

I tried posting about this a few days ago, but it doesn't look like it worked...

The main room is 8.3m long x 5.2m deep x 3.3m high (43sqm). There is also a vocal/amp booth, not sure how big it is, but it could fit two singers comfortably.

blackfoot wrote:Our larger room (35sqm) is my favourite but David Nicholas ( he's recorded Diesel & Baby Animals here) likes the smaller room (25sqm) which has a tighter , brighter sound.

Are there any song clips on Youtube of songs recorded in either room?

+1 On Rancom St Studios. Just finished a day in here and everything is fantastic.. Mighty drum sound in the big room, heaps of really great, well suited mics.
Plenty of round gold stuff hanging on the walls to prove it!

+1 On Blackfoot too..

Can I throw in my .02 cents worth...
I used to have a studio at the Rocks called the Writers Hand and I recorded a band doing an album that also did some tracks with Charles Fisher at Paradise and also with Phil Punch at Electric Avenue. Same drummer same drum kit at all 3 studios. The album was mixed in LA by a very expensive mix engineer who told the band that mine was the studio to do all their drums at in future. Naturally I was pretty chuffed!
At the time I had a Mackie Console & a Fostex G24 1 inch tape machine and a simple collection of 421's, 57's and a couple of condensors...nowhere near as good a room or equipment list as the other studios.
The difference was me working on the drum kit sounds before we hit record, tuning & damping & mic position - so the biggest difference was not the studio but the engineer.
Unfortunately I don't have a room I can do drums in these days but my recommendation would be to think more about the engineer. :)

I think that is pretty correct Paul cept the original question
Was posed by Anton who is a fine a technical and musical engineer as I have ever
Witnessed ... Drums n space n sight lines make for great performances
Quicker and therefore cheaper if you have a room that you know
I think the rooms that we know are now pretty hard to find
So all suggestions are welcome !
Maybe as shown its just a question of looking into different corners

If you have good drums, and a good engineer, the next question is which room?

Just did a day at 301, Studio One, Alexandria..... and it was good.

Recording at home as I write, which is also good, except for the weekend pilots buzzing over the house every five minutes.

Hey Rick I just read your post...Oops! My apologies to you Anton for telling you how to suck egss! Are you talking about just drums or a band?

Thanks Rick for your (grossly exaggerated) kind words :ymblushing:

Paul B - no offence taken, all good. C'mon spill the beans, what album, and which hotshot US mixer?

Well drums mostly, with a few fellas playing along but booths and smaller rooms not important - just a nice large space for spacious rock and roll drums. I know some guys say they can get amazing and big sounds in small spaces. I certainly can't, and now that I think about it I haven't heard any proof of these claims...

Jungle is good btw!

Hey Aside,

I've got just the place. Audio Verite in Alexandria. It's a newly designed room with an inverted vaulted ceiling 4m high at the high points. All drum recording tests have proved positive..... very little comb filtering on mics, powerful sound with a 0.8 - 1 second reverb time. Highly usable for just about any style of music. I've got ASC tube traps to taylor the sound further and I'm working on a collection of discrete mic amps to get you "the" sound PM me for a tour. Website is still underway.

bumping this after three years... what's changed out there lads?

Anything new popped up, anything closed down, talk to me.

I'm a bit out of the loop these days but I just did a few days drum recording at 301 and it was good, but some other things have come up and interested to hear what's going on around town.

Cheers

3 years on i have the best drum room in the universe
only couple of catches.
1. aeromplanes
2. aeromplanes
3. heavy rain on the roof

other then that its perfect .

I will build a room around it and f@#$ up the sound at some point i reckon ,
but basically working around the planes ( cutting drums before pm ) makes it a viable option for me .

did i say its the best drum room in the universe .? oh yes i did .
did i say cept for the aeroplanes ...?

Apparently no artificial reverbs used.

I'd like to add that Blackfoot's console sounds amazing. I think it smokes any vintage Neve or anything. So easy to pull a killer sound.

Also remember that lots of people actually like a smaller room for a big drum sound...I worked with Nick Launay a few times and he told me that for Kate Bush, PIL, Arcade Fire, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and of course SIlverchair he usually preferred a small rectangular room with a lot of early reflections, then when he worked the room mics with compression he could get a lot of room, with decay times still suitable for actually fitting the tempo of the song..

Another studio to check out is the old BJB, which is now called Turning Studios and has an 80s series Neve in there...

http://www.turningstudios.com/

Finally, we are actually finishing a drum room in Marrickville by the end of the year... 7m x 11m x 9m ceiling.. and natural light.
