Ok, I have been recording individual drum parts for certain projects, ie without cymbals, then over dubbing hats or cymbals after.
I am a shit drummer so I find it's easier to keep in with the click if I can hit something while tracking the kick and snare parts.
So I've just been air drumming with the right hand and doing my best to keep time with the kick and snare parts but it just doesn't feel right...
As soon as I move to playing all in takes my performance is much better and less sterile.
My idea is to have something very quiet to hit with my right hand to help keep rhythm for a natural performance, and something that doesn't bleed into other Mics
Is this crazy ??? Normal ??? Or somewhere in between?
Any branded thing that can be purchased ?
Or anyone ever made something like this out of foam from Clark Rubber or something?
I feel like this may be a dumb post but I'm sure I'm not totally alone here.
Any ideas or solutions appreciated,
Dave

No idea what these are actually like, but I saved the link months ago to check out...
Otherwise, what about using an e-kit "hat" you'll get a thud thud thud but much less spill than with real hats I would guess?

Thanks kurt, they look interesting, but I'm
Thinking more on the rubber, foam and dead quiet side .
Those are described as 80 per cent quieter, they'd be great for something though..
I guess I should just build something and try it out
Cheers

You could try using:
- a lambswool bass drum beater on your leg......
- your hand in a glove tapping (lightly) on your leg.....
- a soft mallet on a rubber practice pad....
......another drummer ;-)

inside of pillows/etc is best for this kind of thing, so you get no impact at all. You won't get the bounce-back though, which might affect your playing.

Trick.
If you use a rubber mat or a fake rubber hats, mic it up.
Record it out of phase with your OH's so in theory if there is any bleed it should null.
Also you can use it to trigger samples should you want/need to.

Thank you Mark,
I thought of that concept,I appreciate you taking the time to comment..
I've ended up with some good takes that feel good.
I've always recorded all in takes, but this song is a different thing, got me thinking about making myself more comfortable playing this way..
I also thought that it would be good for visiting drummers to get a good performance out of them when taking this approach to tracking drums in the future ....
