Weird topic, silent hi hats

Ok, I have been recording individual drum parts for certain projects, ie without cymbals, then over dubbing hats or cymbals after.
I am a shit drummer so I find it's easier to keep in with the click if I can hit something while tracking the kick and snare parts.
So I've just been air drumming with the right hand and doing my best to keep time with the kick and snare parts but it just doesn't feel right...
As soon as I move to playing all in takes my performance is much better and less sterile.
My idea is to have something very quiet to hit with my right hand to help keep rhythm for a natural performance, and something that doesn't bleed into other Mics
Is this crazy ??? Normal ??? Or somewhere in between?
Any branded thing that can be purchased ?
Or anyone ever made something like this out of foam from Clark Rubber or something?
I feel like this may be a dumb post but I'm sure I'm not totally alone here.
Any ideas or solutions appreciated,
Dave
