... just press the +/- button to move to the next kit on the module....
I'm converting my a-s to e-s now (mesh top skins and triggers) but have retained the clear resonants. If they're mic'd (just for a bit of shell ring / ambience to enhance the e-sounds) then just some gaff on the bottom skin and gating and/or fader riding.

Re: micing top and bottom of toms
For some tracks I've used just bottom mics especially when the drummer doesn't have mallets but you want a softer mellower less thwack sound. Sometime I'll record the toms on a separate take to the main take so that I can really control their sound and their place in the mix. I've tried the y-cable thing with 421s and it never worked for me.
I find tuning the drum is far more important than micing technique and would rather spend time on that than moving mics around a little.

+1 on drum tuning, I never really appreciated how much difference this makes until I worked with someone that could actually tune drums properly.

Re: micing top and bottom of toms
this is when realize i am spoilt
i learnt to mic up drums under the eyes of mark moffat and ricky fatar
ricky .. well
i learnt early if the drummer doesnt know were his drum key is at anytime of the day
dont bothr him or upset him just - hire a drum tech
so we would just call up the local drum shop and any number of drum techs / wanna a be / actually are session guys would appear on your door with a confident smile and a can do attitude
lacklaster player/not tuners were resentful for about 30 secs till they heard their kit tuned
i have met a lot of engineers along the path that by neccessity have become expert drum tuners
when my new studio has drums i am starting school again
by then i will be an internet drum expert anyway
