ONE - pretty please. Lists are a bit boring and often too long winded to wade through.
And 'recording' as this is an audio related forum, not 'performance'. Although the two are often intertwined.
I give you....
"Slave To The Rhythm' - Grace Jones (Horn and Lipson).
A more or less very well produced naturalistic recording. Timeless in my view.
This was the mid-80's when stone rooms, the non lin reverb, the Fairlight and drum machines were all the rage.
The drums on 'Slave To The Rhythm' just come across as a very nice sounding kit, well played, recorded in a stunning room.
I know the actual performance was edited and looped. I believe the drummer was Alan White (Yes?).
The album that goes with the single is an interesting insight into the creative process, comprising only of reworked, remixed and computerised (Fairlight?) versions of the same song.

Sheik Yerbouti - but then, what else would you expect from the Zappa / Bozzio combination.....

I have 'Bongo Fury' (Zappa/Beefhart) which has wonderful drumming and drum sounds by Bozzio.
Is Sheik Yerbouti the album that was overdubbed on live drum recordings?

A recent one for me is "Surely" by Black Dub. Everything is beautiful about it, & I would never have thought to make a snare sound like that in that kind of song.
I believe it was recorded in Daniel Lanois' house (same place where Neil Young's "Le Noise" was recorded), but it possibly could've been somewhere else. Some videos I've seen show a couple of RCA44's being used on the drums. Of course, the primary factors in the sound would be Brian Blade, his kit & the room, all of which are heard in all their glory on this track.

There is a bit of overdubbing / remixing / splicing of live and studio recordings together on this one (and many others of FZs). FZ is the only artist I've ever heard where the recording is so good that I've been astounded to hear a crowd cheer at the end of a song - Broadway the Hard Way is another great example of that.

actually i think fleetwood mac did rumour there as well !

i heard it closed down , then somebody opened it back up very recently

nirvara did their nevermind drums there
neil young did after the gold rush there

just a great big warehouse space really ... hmm gives me an idea

I think Fleetwood Mac recorded Rumours at The Record Plant in Marin County, just outside SF.

Love Steve Jansen (drummer for Japan).
Lots of innovative drumming on those albums, and great drum sounds between Jansen and Steve Nye (producer).

i thought mic fleetwood told me sound city ? but it was a long time ago
i cut his record "the zoo" when he was in oz an eternity ago
that video of soundcity is cool though
i have never seen it other then still photos
but it has the street mojo for drumtracks for sure

maybe they just cut some drums there ? lots of people did that

damn the torpedoes was like that band tracks in one place overdubs in another

I've got to say I love these American drier drum sounds - Tom Petty, Fleetwood Mac, The Eagles.
They seem more timeless to me than the overblown roomy drums of the 80's and present.
I had a slight chuckle when I went to the old AIM studios and saw the concrete box, slate floored drum room (INXS).

i did a bunch of things at rhino (aims.. . gone now )
the drum sound was huge - bombastic ... i really had fun

those classic us tracks are still pretty roomy ... just no spank and splash


so many studios and great rooms have gone and will go .. hell they bulldozed three of mine so far !

Well, since you're only supposed to list one recording I think it makes sense to tell others about the ones that are not so obvious, rather than the ones that shook you all night long.

Black Hole Sun by Soundgarden.....'93

Maybe it's the song but I always remember loving the big open sound of this kit.
And as a bonus you get a guitar through a Leslie and middle section in 9/8.
Produced by Michael Beinhorn and mixed by Brendan O'Brien.....can't remember the engineer.

One of my favourites has always been Brian Blade- Perceptual. A totally different drum sound from any other record (and drummer to be honest!) I've heard. It's a Lanois/Joe Ferla thing, not sure where it was recorded.
