Drummer in my band is looking for a new kit for gigging and recording.
Currently has an old pearl export which I don't record because I dislike the tone.

I like old sounding Ludwig kits, have had success recording wood and vistalite kits.
Punchy sounding but present mids in the recordings always.
When I use samples for demos, I tend to use old Ludwig kick, toms and old slingerland/rogers snare

As much as I try and persuade him to buy an old kit like this, we are looking at a kit which is sturdy for gigging.

Any recommendations, he is leading toward a Yamaha Recording Custom.
Preference for 20-22" kick.

His snares are already pretty good. Brady/Ludwig Black Beauty.

Yamaha Recording Customs are fantastic.
The only compromise with vintage drums is the hardware.
I use vintage drums all the time, but with all DW modern hardware.
I think vintage Ludwig drums sound very, very good. The kits are cheap in America - no drums seem that reasonably priced to me here.
Apart from that, the super high end drums from 10 to 20 years ago are usually very cheap, like old Pearl MLX, BLX etc.... Back then we were all making high end albums with those drums, so their only negative is they aren't 'the latest, cool thing'.
As I said, the key for me is hardware when it comes to reliability.
I keep my hardware up to date, and prefer my drums older.

+1 for the Yamaha's, also the old premiers sound and record great.

The better modern kits would include, Brady and sleishman.

I loathe peal export kits BTW.......
