I'm doing the research atm for a pair of mics to use on BD mostly - but if they double as a general dynamic mic all the better - so I may be interested in your PL - could you shoot me a PM with the $s you're after?

A pair of Rode Procasters is about $360, whereas a pair of RE-320s is about $500 (incl freight) - I'd like to buy Australian products but if they're not in the ballpark for quality then the extra $140 is worthwhile....

Not sure about the Procaster but I'd look into the frequency response chart and the max SPL to compare both mics seeing you'll be using it on BD mostly.
I think that the RE20 goes a bit deeper in response than the Rode and I'd be interested to know what the max SPL is on the Rode. Pretty sure the RE20 is around 140db which is great for thumping rock kick.

Just thoughts.

Thanks Ben - yes, according to the charts the RE-320 freq response extends down further (+ switchable rolloff) and it accepts higher SPL. If just going by the charts it's a pretty clear choice in favour of the RE-320, but we know about charts and advertising..... The other + for the RE is the resale value - name brand, known product etc.

Looking further into it the Heil PR-40 is an interesting option - got great reviews in SOS.

hey alistair more than anything i'm trying to trade it for an SM7b. dunno why, try something else out.

This may be of interest - the ultimate podcast mic shootout - doesn't have the Rode but it has a lot of other known models.

To me
- the Heil PR-40 was the surprise package - depth and clarity - v nice.
- RE20 sounded a little more breathy and personal than the RE320

I used a Heil PR-40 recently on a session on a kick and it was really good.
its a total winner.
I'm getting one asap

I'm with you on that - a pair of PR-40s are on my shortlist but in the interim I got a pair of RE320s .....

- tested them last night on BD and they are excellent!! Smooth and warm - very accurate - it actually sounds like my BD through the cans.

SM57 sounded quite woolly and lacking dynamics in comparison (as expected) and has been demoted.
