414 EB vs 414 B ULS

Im on the fence - whether to get a pair of EB's with CK12, or the B ULS which seem to do 90 per cent of the work the EB's do (mainly referring to drum overheads here)….

Used both these versions a few times over the years, but never regularly enough to make a call on whether the EB's are worth the extra 3 - 4k.

I feel like just going for the old monsters, but as Im setting up a new studio, Im feeling that 3k could be another 1176, another mic, go towards extra construction or aesthetics/ furniture etc….

Opinions?

P.s - not interested in the newer XL ii's. Just to brittle in bright rooms.

So, the pair will be mainly for OH or you're just saying BULS do 90% as well as Ebs on OHs?

They would mainly be for overheads, yes.

In my experience using both (EB/ BULS) as overheads, the EB's felt much smoother in the high end, but I have never had the opportunity to compare directly.
I was hoping to discuss from someone who has…..

Apologies for the poorly written first message.

No, not poorly written Sam, just wasn't 100% clear... And reason I asked is that I was just wondering if you considered anything else as the main OH pair... like a pair of Coles for example.
...and sorry, I can't be of much help comparing the two versions of the 414s.
I'm sure someone will chime in with their experiences :-bd

Cheers Senad.

Already have a pair of Coles 4038 on the list, maybe already sorted.
I have plenty of Octava's and a few old km's for SDC's, but wanted to add some LDC's (aside from Neumanns)….

The older 414 EBs will most likely give you a little more 'character'..brighter in a good way...
the ULBs have the teflon capsule and are very 'flat' mic in terms of freq response..very useful for using on brighter instruments when you don't want to bring that out...If you also wanted to record vocals then the 414 EB could come into service also there..

Thanks Mal.

I have had some EB's non brass capsules over the years and it was hard to get one with a good working capsule. The years have not been kind to many an EB.
I have had some B uls and have really enjoyed those as well. They are pretty much in. The same territory of sound, maybe a tad quiter too i think from memory. I have none at the moment of either.
