Gents,

I'm looking to add a nice small versatile recording kit to my room. Any suggestions on what I should be looking for? Anyone have anything they want to sell.

I've been googleing but there are more opinions than drums. Things that keep coming up are;

Yamaha recording custom
Pearl reference
mapex Saturn
Tama Star Classic

Not many second hand ones around. Any advice would be appreciated.

Can't go wrong with a Recording Custom, especially with a 16x16" floor tom that can be converted to a kick drum.

yep 2 for the Gretsch. I picked up one for 200. Sounds and records great. Rather spend your money on a top quality snare drum you won't regret it. Then cymbals...

What did you end up getting, Pete?
I'm looking for a decent sounding kit for the studio as well. I can't play, so it's mainly for experimenting with different recording techniques along with hopefully learning to play as well and if any drummers prefer to record on it, rather than bringing their own kit in.
If anyone thinks there would be some good sounding options up to about $1200-ish, I'd love to know! Gotta have hardware and cymbals included.

I found a new old stock Yamaha Recording Custom with the limited edition sizes. It's a great kit. Very happy to have found this. I have the snare but bought a Ludwig Supraphonic. A fantastic snare. It took me a good few weeks to tweak the tunings because there are a lot of "sweet spots" but I recon I'm in the ball park now. I followed Rick's advice and grabbed a Tune-bot to record my settings. It actually holds its tuning very well. I'm a guitarist and tuning drums is a black art. Crikey there are so many options. I basically sat in my quiet room and tried all the options. Bob Gatzen helped heaps. He's on you tube.

It was a lucky deal as it was on layby for years and the purchaser ran out of money. I've really enjoyed the experience and actually having a blast playing them. I'm a drummer now.

Yamaha recording custom seems to be the most recommended studio kit. Hard to find them used for sale.
Where did you get yours from?

Hey Senad, yeh, I can understand why they are sought after for studio. Very versatile. Can be tuned low, medium or high. I got it new in boxes from a music shop in WA. Just lucky as they had not updated their website and still had a sold one on the page. I rang them and they said it was gone. They then called me back when the original buyer of my kit could no longer make payments on the lay-by. I snapped it up.

Well done on picking it up! I'll probably end up getting something cheaper for now and maybe get a nice snare, but the RC definitely sounds like something I'd like to have. I re-mixed a song from 90's with the YRC on it a while back, and the drums sound so good.
