Yep. Hence why I have 4x ATM450 in my own kit and I know where to find the earthworks should I ever feel the need.

If the stage level is low to moderate, and I seem to do a lot of gigs like that, I take the lid off, and use a pair of condensors on stands above the piano, one toward the bell, one toward the hammers. I get them as far away as I think I can get away with, up to perhaps 80cm, perhaps 1m. I have been very happy with the results, requiring minimal EQ. I would not try this for rock and roll, but it has worked very well for musical theatre 'rock and roll', which is a totally different kettle of fish.

I have to use what I can get, so this weekend I'll be using my Schertler GP pickups combined with a couple of strategically placed Beta57a's or if I can get away with it, a couple of SM81's. Piano will be played in Big Bands and Quintets over the weekend. Wish me luck?

Pretty sure they are supposed to be used in addition to a microphone pair, not as a stand alone unit...

The Audio Technica ATM450s continue to impress me at this application.
I have been running them as a spaced pair for Melbourne International Jazz Festival in Bennetts Lane.
With the in-house Grand at full stick and a drum kit close by a decent piano sound is still achievable. Even with the lid lowered to half stick the side address means the mics do not get pushed too close to the instrument.
Both PBS (Paul Maybury) and ABC Jazz (Mal Stanley) have been in to record shows for broadcast and the concencus has been they are quite remarkable and natural sounding, especially for the price ($300USD/pair is exceptional value IMO).

Hi Ben, thanks for your excellent skills and conversation at the Bennett's Lane recording.
The AT450's we used on the piano and drum overheads performed perfectly, the mix of the recording is sounding fantastic!
Where do you find them for $300 a pair?!!!
