why do people do that (delete the post/ replace with sold)
not having a go at you - just genuinely interested - what is the logic behind it?

we know the thing was for sale
we know approximately what you where asking for it.

ive thought it a few times before when others have done the same thing.
interested in the internet etiquette!

Because occasionally I get emails from people who aren't members of this forum about my items for sale. (my signature has my web which has my email on it..)
Sometimes they are emailing from other countries..sometimes the item has been sold for over a year and they either don't read the post dates or simply try their luck.
It has happened a number of times.
I'd prefer not to receive those emails.
That's the only reason.
