***There is usually a two day wait before I can send out finished mics***

I've started making my own Subkick mics, message me if you'd like one :) $110 plus $15 postage from Perth to Australia wide. If paypal is your thing then head to my Reverb store and order there.

The Subkick-01 Low Frequency Microphone is based on the classic speaker mic or 'subkick' design. These mics specialize in capturing very low bass frequencies, and in combination with other mics, add amazing low end punch to sources such as kick drums and bass amps.

With my design I'm using a low output wattage, full range 6.5" speaker in combination with a vented bamboo shell which provides mechanical air damping. Both of these elements ensure that the Subkick-01 runs at a safe output level, similar to a condensor mic, so you can plug it into most mic preamps without the need of a DI. I've used Canare cable on the inside, a Neutrik xlr connector on the outside and a built in mic clip to mount on any mic stand.

I have a soundcloud audio test file to check out with the session details in the soundcloud descriptions and comments.

These look pretty neat and the price seems like a bargain. Would it be rude to ask what driver you are using and how often you actually find yourself using the mic in a mix?

Hi Myles,

I use it in pretty much every mix I do if its a slow to mid paced band. However I do record a lot of punk/metal bands and sometimes the extra low end from the Subkick-01 is too much for lots of fast drumming like double kicks or blast beats. Having said that, the sessions I finished yesterday with a hardcore band had the Subkick-01 on the bass cab mixed with a dynamic and the DI and it really helped fill out the bass guitar parts.

As for the driver, I chose it based on the specs and plenty of comparison tests. I was after a low wattage speaker with a nice extended low end range and this one ticks all the boxes. I'm happy to PM you some more details if you like :)

I've taken the opportunity to redesign the shell and the Subkick-02 is now available, message me if you'd like to know more.
