Yeah I've never seen a 101 for sale in Aus. Agreed about running sound through with no effects just to get the residual sound - delicious!
I've noticed a guy on eBay is selling home-spliced tapes for a very reasonable price and has excellent feedback for them. I'm going to check some out soon.

I have an RE-301. Steve did a mod on mine, so I can leave it running with the transport not running,
He says it's one that may or may not effect the machine in time, but it seems to be no trouble at all.
I like the RE-301 because when you drench an OSCar in it's chorus, echo and reverb, it sounds like
a hyperspace nightmare. It can be a very cheesy sound but done right it sort of drips and drools in a very organic way.
The 301 has the mojo of CV control over the echo rate, via footswitch. So you can do some clever things with the 301.
I think the 501 has the echo rate input as well.

Is there that big audible difference between these Space Echo units?
I don't even know which one I have.... probably a 501 seeing as it's orange and has SOS, Chorus and Spring Reverb.
The spring reverb is great actually, if you are looking for a retro snare sound, or something dubby.
The tape echo is just as good on this as earlier versions.
I admit I don't use the chorus a lot.
I grew up in the late 70's, early 80's when there was chorus on everything. I think I'm over it.

The chorus in my 555 is pretty frigging good.. (Well, 80's was the chorus decade, 70's Phaser? 60's Fuzz?)
Spring reverb is ok, but not my thing unless I'm feeling in a Dub sort of mood.
