So I bought a Beyer 66 tape machine in oz and flew it back to nz in checkin luggage because, well - there's not really a good reason. It was cheap.
It was sold as 'working' but the smaller transformer is loose.
The thing powers on - the first three valves (5y3GT rectifier and 2 x EF86's light up. The 12ax7s stay cold and the unit doesn't meter or pass audio.
I've ordered a replacement rectifier and will swap out the other tubes as a first step.
Wondering if anyone has any tips for trouble shooting these units. It has the tape machine that powers the preamp and it's possible I'm missing something simple around monitoring from the input. I've read the manual but it's obviously geared to getting sound onto / off tape - not using the machine as a standalone preamp.
Would obviously send it to Rob or Joe, but I'm over the dutch these days and makes things more complicated.

Re: Beyer 66 mk ii
You've probably found this stuff already, but the schematic and service manual are available here:
http://www.oneillassociates.com.au/~poneill/Byer%20Rola%2066%20Mk%20II%20Revisions.shtml
The schematic has circuit voltages which can be super handy whilst troubleshooting. Check component connections via the schematic, and if you're lucky you may just have a couple bad capacitors in there.
