Api 312 options

Postby andygriffiths » Sun Dec 09, 2012 9:53 am

Hey guys, I'm pretty new to DIY. I'm looking/wanting to build some api312 clones & am not sure where to look for all the parts. 4 or 8 ch's would be cool. Any help with this would be great. http://www.bobschwenkler.com/312/. I really look the look of these one.

Cheers Andy

You should look at what Joe Malone has to offer in DIY.

Lots of options but seeing as you're in bris contact Joe and you can build the 312 circuit on a baby animal board. I have a rack of four that get used all the time. I used cinemag transformers.

I guess it depends on what kind of form factor/metal work you want to do. The 500/51x series cases are excellent and allow easy swapping of modules in a mix'n'match setup and there are a bunch of DIY options, look at www.groupdiy.com for inspiration. If you go with the JLM option you can get it with a case already predrilled etc (I hate metal work) and this may suit you well as you can put 4 in a rack and you can mix'n'match different options esp. regarding opamps and transformers. The schwenkler kit looks great and gives lots of options on the board but the metal work will need to be spot on if you intend to populate a 2ru case like on his website.

All of the above will give you a version of the API sound (depending on options) and, as the api sound is tx in, single DOA stage and tx out, getting an accurate API sound will be easy. It's all going to be down to the form factor that will suit your skills and your setup best.
