Over featured preamps?

Postby Wiz » Wed Jul 24, 2013 8:37 pm

As I played about with my preamp build today I started to think about something.

My commercial preamps, have an awful lot of stuff I don't use, and therefore I started to question what facilities I
Would put in the preamp I am designing.

In the end I started to think, perhaps I could almost build preamps for specific tasks, with almost set gain being an option. Eg on my drum kit, with me playing it my kick snare and toms are always set to 20 dB. Pretty much all my condenser mics get 35 dB gain. Etc.

I don't need low cut, phase, infinite variable gain, variable impedance on every preamp....

At the moment , depending on how the build turns out, I am thinking that its not unreadable for me to end up building 4 or so real bare bones preamps and keeping maybe two of the commercial ones and selling the rest.

I also started to think after testing the incredibly simple ina217 based preamp. That perhaps straight wire type gain that it delivers might be the ticket, and use my transformer based compressors ( not necessarily compressing) to obtain the diffent color I might want.

Has anyone else been down this path?

I could almost build them as I need them.
It's more just me musing ATM

It's also on my mind about balanced vs unbalanced and how much I need it for this preamp as well.

My Fearn has a gain knob.

It also has an on/off switch, but I don't think that's absolutely necessary.
