Hey Guys,

Has anyone built one of these?

Have one that seems to work perfectly, tuned and sounding pretty close to a real one I compared it to.

Just have an earth hum that I can't figure out - usually when plugging in 2 or more outputs or also connecting a trigger out to another synth. It seems to be okay when using 1 output connected to an unbalanced input (dj mixer), but hums a bit when connected to a soundcard input (balanced) then has ground hum when 2 or more connections are made..

Asked over at the yocto forum, but no one has confirmed if they have a hum free 'yocto' or not?

Would it have something to do with the fact that the Yocto 808 uses a wall wart? Perhaps its causing a ground loop somewhere.

How do you like it? Have you made an enclosure for it?

Yeah, that possibly could be the problem.
I suspect that it is due to the fact that the designer used 'unbalanced' sockets, therefore, if you use 'balanced' leads (as you would in a studio) the 'ring' is not shorted to 'ground'. I use unbalanced roland gear all the time into my patchbay and balanced looms without issue (including a friends 808) I'm guessing that this is the issue - it worked without hum when using a 'single' out - into an unbalanced input (dj mixer)

I wont know for a while as i had to destroy the ribbon cables (they are fragile) as i took it apart to try and isolate different circuits - the ribbons are not off the shelf so i'm waiting on a mouser order... then i'll know.

Apart from that it sounds awesome - i wasn't convinced about the bassdrum, until i heard the machine on a huge club sound system - really reminiscent of how a real one sounds on the same system.

I'm in on the metal / screenprinted case buy going on the yocto forum..

I say do it if you want to use 'trigger outs' and din sync - and you want an 808 that can store songs and pattern play (like 707) and switch between write and pattern without stopping the sequencer (like a 606) it is really good that way. Otherwise an Aira sounds pretty damn good - fun to use and 909 sounds also...

I like the fact that the 3 trig outs are on their own track (not shared with another voice's sequence), however i think by default, the trig channels copy whatever is in the respective matching part (like on a real 808) by default - in case you like the matching rhythm (just like an original 808) - if you don't you edit the trig channel and its seperate (saves you copying the seq data from the other channel) clever.
