I suppose this is the best place to post this...... the flurry of sales was indicative of my response to seeing something too good to miss....... a boat of good pedigree complete with marine survey and ticking all the boxes......a 30ft motor sailer built along the lines of the famous Lacco Couta boats. Hull timber of a eucalypt hardwood "Tallowood", back in the day they lined the Suez Canal with it. The previous owner was an engineer so the electrics , motor etc are all of a top standard fitout, making her a proper little ship. I will have to re step the oregon mast and get new sails cut, but for now the 50 hp perkins deisel will get us there and back.
Well I'm happy to say i didn't need to part with the Audek to make it happen, though there are still a few loose ends to tie up so there will be a parting of the ways with a few more bits and peices of my inventory.

Congrats Chris, a fine looking boat. I'm sure you'll have many pleasant days on the water on her!

Re: Yes, I bought the Boat!
Finding a Mooring can be tricky business. They are being turned into real estate with the development of marinas for luxury, top end of the market boaties. And around Melbourne even the swing moorings that where within reach of the battlers of the day, up till recent times, are going the same way. Some real estate prospector even attached his plastic business card to my dingy a few months ago advertising himself as a mooring broker. He's lucky I didn't see him doing the rounds or he would have been wearing a wet suit.......not the type you surf in either!
All jokes aside, a fair price for chain, and labor for laying the mooring plus the annual fee is all they should cost, and with local knowledge and networks with original fishing families, we have that sorted.
The more I have looked into this boat the more i have been surprised at how good an option it is. The planks are full length and the joins so well layed up that no caulking is used, the hull timbers just swell tight and seal like a wine barrel. She was built by Brighton boat builder Jack Gutierrez who owned a Timber yard, so the selection of timbers is first class, with Jarra, Tallow wood, Celery Top Pine and NZ Kauri for the cabin sides. There is standing head room in the cabin for my wife but I have to duck a bit. She has a eutectic fridge and is set up for the bay and coastal cruising to places like Wilsons Prom. The furthest she has been from Melbourne is a trip to Flinders Island in Bass Strait. She has been part of the Sandringham Yacht Club all her days and even has a trophy in her honor. The Inclinometer is a wonderful bit of vintage kit and is said to have come from one of the midget subs that beached in Sydney during WW2. The owner I bought her off is an electronics engineer and has every aspect of the electrical fit out and motor up to professional standards and she is under current marine survey for the hull and all fittings. He even rebuilt the autopilot which is a very early version but built to last. The mast is out so the boat can fit under Melbourne's bridges because she was often motored up the Yarra. Mostly I will be heading in the opposite direction and sailing is the major draw card so a high priority is to get her sailing again. Everything mast and rigging wise is there for it but the sails are old and not in great shape. Displacement is 8 tons with external lead ballast built into the keel and lead ingots for internal ballast. With all that weight she has a smooth motion and cuts through the chop and has a nice smooth motion.

Re: Yes, I bought the Boat!
Nice boat, Chris.
I certainly wouldn't want to sail it to Flinders Island !
It was bad enough in the ferry that goes from Melb to Devonport..could nt walk straight and that boats huge.
They tell me Bass Strait is one of the most dangerous bits of water in the world !
Cheers

Re: Yes, I bought the Boat!
I won't be sailing to Flinders Island any time soon, but to Wilsons Prom in a few years time. A trip to Flinders Island is quite do able though. You need plenty of time on your hands and to pick the weather window. Then you coastal cruise to the Prom and shelter at Refuge Cove. When it's good to go the next leg is to Deal Island and shelter there. The last leg is to Flinders Is. So the trip is broken up into overnight island hops, planing to reach landfall after sunrise.

Re: Yes, I bought the Boat!
Update #1
Have now got the mast from the storage shed and have been checking
the rigging, getting all ready to step the mast on Sat, wether permitting.
The mast isn't Oregon, after all........, its A grade spruce of the tightest
grain you could get! And on the electronics side of things out of the little
ships inventory in storage was an EMI marine radio! It also reseives AM.
Cant wait to power it up. On the audio front, after sitting in the cabin listening
to the speakers I have decided to mount my spare pair of Duntech PCL monitors
In their place to enhance the listening pleasure..... might even work for a rough
mix.
