Royer/Speiden SF12. Never tried it on a whole band though.

Mono or stereo?

I like my akg c34 and I've had good results with the sf12 and sf24. Also a mid side setup with a stereo mic can work well depending on room and placement. Placement will be crucial, too much distance and the recording will be very blurry and roomy, too close and one instrument will be in solo mode with backing.

If you're going mono then I'd choose a wide cardioid condenser like a Neumann u89.

Try to get the instruments to be very well balanced in the room (hopefully it's a sensitive drummer) and put the mic where it sounds best not where it looks best.

I have used my soundfield st350 for this purpose before - but that might count as cheating.

I have had good results using a shure VP88 stereo mic. I bypass the mic's internal ms matrix so i can adjust the ms when mixing. Another mic i used a lot for stereo capture of acoustic bands is a vintage pair of AKG 451, using ORTF but wasn't too fussy about staying with the prescribed angle of 110. I would often narrow the angle a bit to get less width in the stereo image.
