If you have powered monitor speakers use a balanced XLR (mic) or TRS cable.
You can use Un-Balanced cable (instrument lead) but a balanced cable is better.
Speaker cable is only to be used from Power Amplifier to Speaker.

Hi Cowtown this little story is no reflection on your question but it prompted a memorable situation i had with a friend setting up a live PA rig years ago.
Speaking of speaker cable, a 'salesperson from a music shop down my way sold a guy long pre-made speaker cable to carry signal from his desk to power amp on stage. The PA owner was new to audio and called me to help him track down why he had a noise problem with his set up. I couldn't get over how the sales assistant had set him up for such a difficult entry as he bought all his gear from the shop. As it turned out the PA owner wasn't that willing to listen to well meaning advise.....I had suggested there where better ways to get into live sound that buying a PA from a local retail store and as it turned out this sort of problem followed him where ever he went.

A friend was recently sold mic cables as being suitable to go from a 500W per side amp to her speakers, once again, by a local music store.
