No idea about a defacto standard but I've got a pair of grover notting CR2 here and I think they are excellent. Brilliant transient response, all the detail I could want in a single driver reference speaker.

Probably the Avantones - I have a pair of passive ones.
Would not reccommend the actives though.
But from my perspective, there is something really special about the original Aurotones - but I would imagine there would not be many around with the cones still in good nick.

Yes I would go for some CR2's. They are great and they have a special on at the moment with a driver as well which I got. The driver that comes with them does look a bit "budget home build", but they actually sound great.

Of course quality is important, but most speakers of that size will do the job you are looking for. Its mostly just the removal of that lower range that lets your brain focus on the mids and highs. But the Nothings are great quality on top of that as well and Aussie made. Thumbs up...

Had not heard of the CR2's
I pretty much don't use my Avantones, just a little too small for me - as I have a Sony ghettoblaster that I have loved for 10 years now.
Might have to get me some CR2's as well - made in AU - Yes!

What amps are you guys using with them?

I'm running mine with a 100w Talia broadcast studio amp.

This is the amp that comes with CR2's/ Like I said it looks a little "budget electronic" but is perfect for the CR2's and very small. Under a handspand wide.
