Harmonic Distortion... Noise Floor.

Okay, due to a shoulder injury, I have FAR TOO MUCH TIME ON MY HANDS..... 8)
I downloaded Fuzz Measure (Demo) for the Mac.
Its software that allows you to measure all sorts of things, Frequency Response, Harmonic Distortion. Really good meaty geek stuff.
Okay, I also found a website that allows you to enter how many dB down your Harmonic distortion is and converts it to a percentage, just like the ones in specs sheets. eg -80dB = .01% THD
so on to my head scratchin question...
if, I have a noise floor in my studio, that masks THD, does it matter?
Its all well and good to have great THD figures, but if as soon as I plug something other than wire to wire , does it matter?
Its been really interesting comparing all the preamps I have, DI's, etc and what they do THD and Freq Response wise.
The Harmonic Distortion figures of the standard preamps in my RME UCX are staggering... 100dB down or -001 % right from 1 hz to 22Khz
every other premamp I own, has TFRMRS in them, they have really sloping THD figures .. really high up to about 100hz then they taper off all of them to between 60 and 70dB down at the usually quoted 1KHz mark.
the RME's are the preamps I never reach for.
So, I am sure I am learning buckets, not quite sure what to make of it.
I can also see that driving the preamps, plays havoc with the THD side of things.
does anyone else geek out on this ?
