Hi folks

I've been searching for this power plug adaptor - AC to AC 18VAC 500mA. Finding it hard to find anything local to those specs...
Does anyone have one to let go of or have any knowledge of where I can buy this adaptor.

Many thanks in advance. :)

Hi Ben

An AC > AC adapter is just a transformer
18VAC can be made by connecting two 9VAC windings in series
You could buy this tranformer from Jaycar, wire it up nicely in a little box and be done
http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=MT2082

Just about any local tech could do this for you
I'd be happy to do it for you also and post it up, very easy and easy to do it safe. I'm back and forth to Jaycar daily as I'm right in the middle of building about 10 power supplies so slipping an extra one in there is no problem if you like. At a guess it'd cost you $60. I'm surprised a quick look on eBay gives nothing..

A cheap alternative (at the sacrifice of one volt) would be:

You would need to sort out your own connector though

That's very kind of you to offer Lee.
At this stage I'm hoping that an off the shelf powerpack adaptor is available and for around $20-$30. Seriously can't believe there isn't 50 different ones available especially on the jaycar website.

I always find AC wall warts at flea markets.
Telephone related junk (modems / routers etc) all seem to have used AC.
So it doesn't take much hunting to find an appropriate AC power supply.
eBay is another option.

No worries mate, yeah it's just that it's AC that there aren't many options
Plenty of overseas eBay options but I don't think that'd be a good idea :P

What's it for?

I really do think that 17VAC Jaycar one would be fine

Check out WES components http://www.wescomponents.com.au. Very big selection and much cheaper than Jaycar. What do you need to power with it ?

hey Ben, I just had a look in our bucket of obscure power supplies (We throw nothing out) and found an 18 VAC,
1.3A supply.
Send me an address and I'll drop it in the mail for you.
cheers
Alastair

problem solved. however next time ... Altronics sell a 16V one. And in the real world you may find 16V is sufficient as most AC plug packs voltage is not well regulated and typically you'll get 20% more to a light load.
