How much is an SH-5 worth?
...because some wag has one on ebay right now opening at $8999.
I know the SH-5 is a good synth, but I have seen them go for $1200 at Aceben in the city
and online. This one appears to be excellent, but you can buy quite a large modular for
that kind of money!
There was an SH-101 yesterday for $700 - a blue one with the mod grip.
I nearly bought it, but I don't think the 101 is quite worth that much.
It was "buy now" and someone did, quite quickly as it was not there
this morning.
If someone wants to sell me a 101 (any colour) for $450-500 I think that is probably
much more reasonable price - but maybe I an wrong?
The 101 seems to be more rare overseas, from what people have told me...

A mint SH-7 went for $1840.00 a few weeks ago in Melbourne, and one went a week or two earlier for $3500.00 in Europe. The SH-7 is a lot rarer than an SH-5, so I would expect a mint SH-5 to go for around 13-15 hundred in Australia. Australia got a huge amount of Roland gear throughout the 70's and 80's, whereas I am told that Europe didn't, hence the price difference now.
I just re-capped my SH-7 as the electro's had dried out somewhat, and it sounds fantastic, at the same time I replaced the electro's in the audio path only in an SH-7 belonging to one of the other members here, and they both now sound the same. The caps in both machines had the green corrosion forming on one of the legs, so really if you buy an SH-5 it will need re-capping. The price that ebay seller is asking is about 5 times the actual value of a good SH-5.

I think the days of finding a 101 for $450 are in the past, maybe a few years ago.. recently the price of a 101 (especially a red or blue one) has jumped significantly. $650 - $750 for a grey seems the going ebay rate.
Who knows, maybe in a few years they'll drop in price? But everyone was saying that surely, with Acid dead, a 303's price would drop, and that has not exactly happened.
Also, a Lot of the 80's rock / electro cross over bands love the 101, as they look cool, and you can wear em.
You might luck out and find one in a trading post or a private sale for less tho.
I've used my 101 for a long long time, and love it for bits.. to be honest, it does not have the most amazing sound, pretty safe, but it does a few things [Deep basslines, cool sequencer], and boy does it do em well.. It's the one synth I always take to gigs.
Regards
Mike

I paid $650 no questions asked about 5 years ago for a blue SH-101 with mod grip....
:-)
so I don't think that $700 was so bad - in fact just your standard grey 101 will go for at least $700 on ebay these days in basic condition.
if you don't want to spend more than $4-500 for one, I think the days of you being able to get one are gone (or you could be lucky!!)
That SH-5 price is just insane....
even more stupid than that $3000 wasp the other month.
I wonder if it's the same seller?

SON: Dad? A guy's selling a pair of jousting sticks.
FATHER: Jousting sticks? What's he want for 'em?
SON: Make us an offer. Give him a call?
FATHER: Yeah.
SON: Dad? 450.
FATHER: For jousting sticks? Tell him he's dreamin'!

Don't mention a blue mod grip around these parts, Ryan might end up trying to steal it off you... how much were cash were you willing to part for that blue mod grip again Ryan?
As a Side note, many many years ago, when I had but one keyboard (An Alpha Juno) I was so sure that I was going to get a 101, that when the nice local music shop owner said that he found a boxed 101 modgrip still with it's box with price sticker on it, I took it for all of $10, so for a year, I was the proud owner of just a 101 mod grip.. (Great story, I know..)

hi there,
I may have been out of the loop for a while, but i always thought a SH 5 was worth way more than a Sh 7 (which i used to have).
My best 101 story...in 1984 when i worked at allans music in Melb we were blowing out red and blue 101's with free handgrip.....for $99 !!! (i remember we had about 12 in a pile)
Personally I wouldn't have touched one then (having a JP8 and a minimoog!) but in 2001 i walked into a cash converters up here and they had a red one for $70 which i promptly bought and used on a few trax..nice sound.
Cheers

That's just insanity, for that money and a bit if haggling you could have a new in the box Moog Little Phatty and a Moog 12 stage phaser pedal.

Actually... if anything, this is an indication of how annoying ebay can be for sellers, now that bidders can't get negative feedback from sellers and feel they're not accountable for their bidding anymore.
What's the bet that this 101 will be relisted, due to a non-paying bidder?

That's almost a certainty I think. A friend of mine had an 808 on there a few weeks ago, it went to very high bids an of course no payment.
