VST with formant Filters??

At the risk of being looked down upon by all yall hardware elitists :P

i was wondering if anyone knows of a good sounding VST synth with automatable formant filters...

i'd like to be able to make a synth go YA YA YA YA YA....then morph to a WOWWW, or a WAAAA, BWOWWWW, u get the drift....

the key is to be able to morph between vowel sounds, which is difficult to impossible when i tried using vowel sounds inside a sampler....

any help would be appreciated!!

I'm not sure Jamil but I'd probably try recording or taking vowels from a sample of some sort, edit the samples into 3 or 4 parts say wow then ad b to the wow with a crossfade of some sort, then maybe wa yayaya, then drop them back into the sampler and start playing with envelopes and filters to sort of give the impression it's morphing.

My best idea without knowing too much about the latest synths.

Or just record all the different vowels, letters and words you need into a multisample and load onto different keys, then its not too hard, just takes time to set up the multisample.

i dunno, the vocals idea...is kinda not working the way i wanted....

if i had a voice box, or decent vocoder.. i think through experimentation i could definately get closer sounds to what i want, using the human voice.


so, thats sorta why im interested in knowing if any VSTs do formant filters...i know a few oldschool samplers have them, as welll as a few modular synths....VSTs, damn you how u suck, lol

I sold a decent vocoder last year to a guy in Ireland... got $2500 for it, thanks to Steve restoring it for me!

The orange vocoder is cool, as is the Logic one, but I haven't tried anything else - I do reckon vocoders will get you the sound you're after, from my understanding of your description... BTW, I'm not great with interpreting "ya da wows", but if you want a real laugh you should see me try and explain what fill I want the drummer to play haha...

well, ideally what i want is a synth sound, with morphing vocal qualities that i can assign some LFO action to...

im pretty sure that with the monk VST plus some sampling + further filters, im gonna get what i want, a sick analog vocoder would be sick though :P

It's not a VST, but the Nord micromodular/modular have formant filters, oscillators, LFOs and a vocoder to boot!

The Access Virus synth has a vocoder, so I would assume that the plug-in version would also have one?

stupid question....

does the quality of the mic you use affect the quality of the end result of the vocoder effect that you apply??

ie. neuman plugged into a vocoder ....is better than using the stock goose neck thingo u get on most vocoders??

yes, but it'll not make much difference... vocal audio is only used to control the (12-20) frequency bands filtering the synth audio... so a mic with more highs might give your output a bit more top end, but it's not really noticable. mic sensitivity is pretty much a non-issue, because of the non-subtlety of the whole process..

the quality of the synth you use to vocode with will make the biggest difference.

keeping a good consistent level in the synth and the mic is really important to getting a good vocoder sound.. settings on any compressor you use on the mic to keep the level consistent will make a bigger difference than the mic.

ok, so after alot of experimenting..

the sound i want is pretty much....

recording vowels, chopping and arranging them ...then using the chopped vowels and vocal sounds as the modulation source in a vocoder....

my problem now, lies in finding a vocoder that lets u use an carrier signal...ie. i want to use NI Massive...as the synth, being modulated by my vocals....

the orange vocoder...kinda sounds like ass, need something that keeps the synth sounding good...

any suggestions??

Maybe a little left field....

My old Boss guitar processor had an effect kind of like this, each note would be made to sound like a vowel. Worked for guitar, might work for a synth, as long as it had transients to trigger the effect?

hey kurt,

i've been raiding the formant filters, they werent the sound i was after...

the sound is distrinctly a vocoder one.

just not digging the Vocoder sound of the Orange...i know there are much better out there,

i need a tight vocoder which doesnt screw with the synth signal..

I tried the Form8 filter, its not what i was after...it just does EEEE or UUUU sounds, doesnt let u go, BWWWOOOOW, or YAAAAYAYAYA, hehehe

I guess it's like many things audio... often the hardware version is better...

I personally find, that the simpler the synth sound, the better.. I prefer a nice big single sawtooth wave, filter wide wide open.. no resonance.
Also, A bit of white noise helps too.

I would also slightly disagree with Nofi (Sorry Julian) about the mic used.. I've found some Mic's better than others.. Stick with dynamics.. Nothing tooooo fancy , but a SM-58 works great.
ie, don't use your computer Skype mic...

Play with the input levels on the Mic also... A couple of my Vocoders have compression on the mic input, which can help.

It does also help if you talk nice and strong, and always with a german accent.
