why would you want some new old piece of junk like that?

I'm pretty sure some casio with built in speakers could do a similar job..

pfffft! it'll be awesome!!

Though yes, of course, if you'd been a good friend and come through and found an original SEM for me to buy when I asked months ago, I wouldn't have to go and buy a remake!

Patched out in what way though, it isn't clear from the website?
Simple cv and gate wouldn't be enough to tempt me.

Well... I've had 2 emails from tom oberheim today... 2nd one lists the IOs (I wanted to know, so I asked) and basically.... well.. he's patching out everything there's a connector for in the SEM module. And looking at the list, this is pretty much everything you could expect any part of the synth to have. we have LFOs, envelopes (trigger ins and outs) all the VCO inputs and outputs (no separate waveforms but), all the filter IO, including separate filter response outputs, VCA, it's a total party going on there.

I could PM you the list, but not really happy to post it up here cause it's a private email. And I think that I'm not the only person who was curious about this, so it'll probably be posted up on his website sometime soon anyway.

anyway - yeah. at today's exchange rates I'll land this here brand new, for under $1k. pretty awesome I think!

Good to know.
I have a 4 Voice and the sound is marvelous.
I might buy one of these as back-up one day.

actually, wait up - you do get separate sawtooth and pulse waveform for each osc.

I want one of these too. Do you think anyone will make a replacement keyboard/bed for the SEM so you can do a 4 voice or a 2 voice?
Wouldn't be nice if they did the whole setup again? I would seriously love an OB1 as I have no Oberheim sounds in my collection, but a SEM would fit nicely
in here!

I'm sure if people show he can make money doing it, he'll be tempted to. though I reckon the keyboard case would cost a lot.

But for a start, there'd be nothing stopping you from getting 4 of them, and a polyphonic midi/CV converter....

Possibly the best combination would be a midi SEM and a non midi SEM (joined by cv and gate from midi SEM).
I think 2 x SEM's is enough honestly.
I often use two or three only on my Four Voice.

Definitely looking forward to this re-issue.

Just noticed the price for the non-midi module has increased by 40 bucks.

Has anyone thought of doing doing a kind of "bulk buy" as a group?

I really want one of these and I guess so do a few others. The only distributor is in the USA from what I gather.
If anyone wanted to help me buy one of these, when they get their own, I would be very grateful. It would be easier to pay someone
over here than in the USA, as I found when getting my DRM1, although it wasn't too bad.... ...but a group purchase
would come with benefits eg shipping etc...

hmm... just looking again, the sales pages are up and you can order now.

http://www.audiomidi.com/Tom-Oberheim-M423.aspx

http://www.audiomidi.com/Synthesizer-Ex ... 12455.aspx

Though shipping to Australia is pretty steep for such a small thing... US$130!

maybe a bulk shipping deal is a good idea?

actually, the more I think about this, the more annoying it is.

I really doubt analog haven would charge that much for shipping something so small. but cause it's only available from one retailer, there's not any chance to get a cheaper shipping price.

also, the US$40 extra buy price, plus US$130+ shipping is going to kick this fair and square past the AU$1000 mark.... which basically means it's going to be hit with import duties, too. And what's that? 15% on top of everything else? So with the extra govt import duties on top of the purchase price and shipping blowout, this is basically a 30% cost blowout.

not happy.

When I got my DRM1, NovaMusik said they would only cost it at $400 for insurance/customs purpose and also marked it "used in box".

They are not supposed to do this, but it was welcome. I also asked them to send it via USPS rather than UPS or FedEx because in spite of the FTA, these
ones gouge like mad on "import duty" etc even though they got paid at the sender's end.

AudioMIDI say explicitly they will not do any of the above.

My suggestion is that we organise a bulk buy and then contact someone in the USA who is reliable to facilitate it!

I dunno... sounds like a lot more potential risk and a lot more chances for things to go wrong, and a chance for someone in the US to get burned really hard if worst came to worst with a bunch of them.

I'd just like the choice of sales outlets, or at very least for audiomidi.com not to be such rorts with the shipping. Especially when all US customers get free shipping over $99... now I know how they afford to do that - we pay for it....

The only way I can see this working out for me is if I can get my hands on a fedex account to use (shame I just left my old job - I could have organised that for my work account in 2 minutes) The new job might have the same setup, but i won't see that till the start of september, when I start there...

I think I just lost a bunch of interest in buying this synth. at least buying one new, and buying it now.

well - I just had a look at the audiomidi.com website. It looks like they got the message from everyone about overseas shipping being a rort.

their site just quoted US$60ish for the shipping, which is half of what their first shipping quote was, and right on what my original guess of the shipping cost should be. Plus with the currently pretty bad US dollar, even with the extra US$40 unit price, the landed price is back down under AU$1k!

yes! no import taxes! so I'm back in.... but not this month... I just spend $1k last week on something else.

lets hope the exchange rate holds.

So the only decision to make now is which one?

I am torn between the MIDI one and the CV/Gate one with the breakout panel.
I could drive them either way with the frostwave and/or System 100.

Hi there,

Only real consideration is midi for resale value !
I'd most probably keep mine so I'd get CV.

it's a new synth... no chance of good resale value.

buy it because you want to play with it... expect to lose at least 30% of the cost if you pass it on, cause buyers always have the option of getting it brand new for the same price you paid.

:-)

oh.. the MIDI version will definitely push you over the $1000 cost barrier. so there's another 15% on top of the price for that one, too...
