we may be changing our mackie d8b desk with a controll 24.
this presents an issue. 16 channels of adat conversion.
we currently have a mix3 system with 1 x 888 (4 x expernal pres) and an adat bridge giving us 16 i/o from the mackie.
if we go the controll 24 we will loose the 16 a/d/a via the adat bridge. (the mackie is an a/adat adat/a converter as well.
we will have the 16 controll 24 pres that need to go into tools. (to replace the mackie ones)
we can get a/adat stuff to go via the adat bridge (apogee ad8000,800, ad16, rme ???) or get 2 more 888/24's and forget the whole adat thing.
or some other 8/16 channel way into tools. (like the adat thing listed here for sale)
we dont need more outs, only more ins.
what would you do. are there any solutions i have not thaught of.
(2 x rme 8 channel things will get me done for about $3k.) or the 16 channel apogee for about $5.5k.
the alesis/behrincrud way is less than $1k and may be ok for the ctrl24 pres, but not when we replace them with better ones.
opinions please

For cheap as I said yesterday the be!@#$%^& or Alesis stuff.
If only for the Control24 pres it would do. Even if you loose 50% hit not much $'s later when you upgrade
Again for cheap and might not even be better the be!@#$%^& or Alesis :) a 1622. These are the same as a 882/20 convertors so only 20bit.
I changed from 882/20 and 1622 combo to HD and it was a big jump.
Or check out for a second hand AD16 Apogee, there the older model.
Or there is a creamware A16 on ebay localy now $360 less then a day to go.
New Auroa cards look nice. But $'s

Seen them sell around $800 ebay.
I mean 888's were never my fav connvertors anyway.
Would see what the RME or even be!@#$%^&/Alesis sounded like against your 888 your got now. If you can do a borrow and test.
Maybe see if Digi can sell you a trade in before they scrap them...

remember the b*&$^ ada8000 used alesis 24bit chips
but the preamps sucked and the line in still used the analoue channel path.
there were mods to the analogue path - run through the prodigy geek-fest if you want to follow that up.
when i was hunting for my stereo ad/da i was certainly finding a lot of good reports on the RME stuff - german build quality, rigid clock.
definately a higher class than the digidesign units. by report, that is.
they've got a new 8 channel ADI-192 DD which might mean the old units are dropping in price. . .
wasn't Mark Rachelle saying his be!@#$%^& ada8000s sounded as good or even better than his digi 888s at the old forum?
