Monitors

Postby Lucas » Mon Sep 26, 2011 10:58 am

Starting to look around for options to upgrade our monitor system. Will start off gently with the idea of upgrading again in the future.

For the sake of weight and room and simplicity we are thinking of going powered.

On my list so far are JBL PRX612M and QSC K12. Second hand in good nick is preferred.

These boxes are pretty damn good value and they sound much better than previous generations of plastic powered options.

Looking for suggestions on other boxes/approaches that should be considered for around the same price per box. Anyone got some micro wedges they want to sell at a loss?!?!

What does everyone prefer - 12" or 15"? I tend to think vox sound richer and more well defined in a 12".

Any preferences for any particular dispersion characteristics? Especially for paired monitors on small stages.

any small venue only needs a 12"

if you are only looking at powered boxes, the RCF are usually my favourite.

not sure about prices though

yep - if i had to use a plastic box, that would be the one i would ask for.
and really - a whole lot of the time (acoustic acts, covers bands, in fact nearly anything but "rider spec" rock) they will totally do the job.

sound nearly good enough to run without a graph to tune if you have to aswell - say you had to add an extra send for a keys player or something you didn't know about and didn't have a graphic for.... no problem

I have always found these quests to be really good:
http://www.questaudio.net/products/q_motion/qm-12mp.php

I've run into 'em at a few venues and for the size they sound huge. I believe I normally see them powered by Quest amps also. Never looked at price, but I get the vibe that they're a bang-for-buck kind of monitor. I highly recommend you look into them. They've got balls, easy to work with, no need to get to "butchery" with your graphs. They couple nicely also, and will take a bit of kick drum if needed.

Don't know what price-range you are looking at and what you plan on using them for, but if this would be right for your situation - I like those JBL EON speakers. Powered; so, easy. Great for getting a clear vocal out of 'em with no hacking required. Get the 12" though.

RCF 522a is the pick of the plastic bunch for monitors IMO, but the QSC K12 is excellent, and both are also great FOH boxes on subs. If you can't get a pair of 522a, the K12 are a bargain!

4 minimum, 6 is better. budget is $3 Gish for 4. RCFs may have been bought this weekend, will talk to the owner on Monday.

These will be stepping stone monitors on the way to something better...

Then wait and buy something better. Or buy 2 better ones now and rent until you can get another 2 better ones. Find a local provider who has some to try and if they work for you buy 2 and rent 2. When you eventually end up with 4 or 6 monitors you will still occasionally need more so better to get something the same that you can rent locally.
