I Pad software???

Postby The Tasmanian » Wed Sep 28, 2011 10:30 am

Is anyone using the ipad to write with?
Any cool synth apps that impress - or is it all still in infancy.
I tried garageband on it last night - and was bored within minutes, interested if anyone is getting any musical value out of the ipad

a few people are makign stuff u can sketch on....then export sessions to replace samples etc.

imo tho, its just gimmicks...it will always be gimmicks...i downloaded the first incarnation of Reason for iPhone, (yes not an ipad i know) and it was too fiddly to be of any worth.

Thats what I was thinking Jamil - but I think it is a platform that could eventually be really great as a writing gadget.
I was hopimg the ms20 and electribe could be good?

Guess one of the flaws of the iplatform currently is that there is only a concept of an app. So in terms of a DAW or Synth or FX programs, I dont think there is currently a way for them to interoperate. So that means that you are kind of devoted to one solution, and what ever comes in the box. So even if the MS20 is fantastic, there is no way to integrate that into something like garage band, in the way you could on a laptop/desktp environment/DAW.

Have noticed there are some pad computers emerging, which kind of dock with a keyboard to form a laptop, but you can detach the pad portion and use stand alone. Will be interesting to see what options this tech provides in muisic terms, especially if there is an OS that can opertate in a pad environment, and provides support for existing tech. I think this may be something that win8 might be good at, esp if it can run your regular products, and works pretty much the same way.

I have a multitrack app on my iphone which works pretty well for sketching things, but its audio only, still quite handy for grabbing ideas, and no less powerfull than the trusty old portastudio.

Cheers

Yeah - someone was mentioning a ipad dock that had balanced outs - but there goes the portability

Hi Chris, iOS music is moving forward at a pretty good pace. Although I am still of the same general opinion regarding audio generation/recording or editing on the devices, the quality of midi sequencers and touch surfaces via core midi & touch osc is getting REALLY good, latency is low and there seems to be a good drive from developers to make it a viable part of most electronic based studios. Omnisphere has an iPad controller, Alchemy for iPad was released yesterday with a pro app to be used as a controller for the plugin. It really is a Killer controller/sequencer IMO hopefully more plugin developers see the benefits of iPad as controller for their DAW software.

As far as creating full tunes on iPad, recent open software developments have allowed inter app sync via midi and virtual midi ports between apps. Korg has just released it's own new sync technology called WIST, this bundled with most apps having audio export/copy and paste and you definitely have the potential to create full tracks, the sound of some of the synths and drums is pretty good now too. Although personally Ill take my studio or a laptop anyday, going back to 16bit audio streams is not where I want to be, although matched with the Alesis I/O dock for better outs, midi etc you have a pretty powerful portable little jam station. Definitely capable of sketching ideas, getting some inspiration or killing some time.

I am using the ipad to mess about with my synths. I bought this little gadget called a
MIssingLink: http://wifimidi.com/

It is an OSC to WIFI MIDI convertor. You use apps like Control or TouchOSC to design templates and
UI's for the ipad and map MIDI control messages via OSC. The latency is extremely low, from what I can see.

I used TouchOSC to create a template for the MKS-50 rack synth, based on the PG-300:

http://wifimidi.com/phpBB3/download/file.php?id=64

I am developing others as well. The MissingLink itself is like some kind of Arduino device
and was USD175, but really worth it. They sent me one and it didn't get to me, so they
sent me a second one, no questions. There a lots of new templates coming for this gadget
every day - it's a lot of fun. I have created some generic templates to control filter/resonance
on my Doepfer A-100 among other things - so the sky is the limit. There is talk of a special CV version
of the MissingLink as well.

Thanks for that Rachel
That missing link box is pretty cool actually - it certainly opens up the ipad and even laptops to a whole lot of stuff.

The best part of the MissingLink is that you do not need a computer to use it.

You do need a computer to design the layouts but the actual use of the Missing Link
needs no computer at all - ie you could jack the ML straight into the MIDI port of a modular, or whatever
device and use the iPad to control it directly. I love these sort of "edge" technologies - its just a couple
of guys in a garage making stuff that works!

Yeah, I caved in and bought the Fairlight App! I think it is very of cool. I do not know a way to get
all the factory samples any other way as I do not think other "Fairlight" sample sets are properly cleared.

In any case, Page R is there and you can create your own tracks and in the full version create
your own voice libraries etc..... If you plug the iPad into a mixer etc and start playing the Fairlight,
you soon forget it is a mobile device...... It really is a tiny little Fairlight in your hands....!

That Fairlight app blows me away!
I used to own a Fairlight II - and I still have cravings for certain sounds like they are permanently baked into my creative memory.
It might be the app that finally makes me take the plunge for the Ipad - and the missing link too.
I mean - if this is what is already available - then in a few years these tablets will be the bomb for writing and portability.
Thanks for the input!

Hi Chris,

As a series 1 ,11 and 111 former owner..the Fairlight app looks like lotsa fun(if i had an ipad !)

For the record, I think that Bitley sounds have the best Fairlight library atm. Its avail in full library for Reason and an on going project for Kontakt 4 and above.

I was recommended an app called Nanostudio which I got but haven't had much time to play with yet. Had a brief look at it on an ipod touch and it did look plenty deep enough to lay some ideas down.

Bebot is the cutest synth I know. Lots of fun for a couple of bucks, especially if you start moving beyond the presets. I don't have an iPad, but it works just fine on an iPhone, though I do lust for a bigger screen :ymdaydream:

I haven't used it, but Filtatron is another Moog app that looks pretty cool. $8.50

I've recently started playing around with the iPone version of GarageBand and you can do some very cool stuff with that as well. Can't believe it's only 5 bucks!
please tell me to get off the internet. I've got work to do!

Hi there,
iPad now in my hand..downloaded some good software.

Now I need some simple interface stuff. Is the camera connection kit the easiest way to get midi I/o ?
Or the ik multimedia thing ?
What do I use for audio output? Is this Alesis dock thing any good or overrated ?

I had a client here last week that had the Alesis dock and it was really good - having proper outputs and inputs and midi in one box is such good value considering the price

Thank Chris, the Alesis thing seems to be the way to go...is there anything else out there like this ?
Just a note I found on my travels, the Alesis thing is actually designed for the iPad 1 and the iPad 2 needs an adaptor to dock properly,....or a wad of paper underneath to hold it in place!
The outputs ARE balanced 1/4 in trs.
