Mastering - what is your preferred application and why?

Postby Drumstruck » Wed Oct 12, 2011 2:46 pm

Hope this question doesn't tread on any endorsement toes - if it does I won't be insulted if you delete it........

So I'm wondering - what do you experienced guys use as your preferred mastering application (software)?

Any particular reasons you choose it and not something else?

I have Wavelab 7 primarily because:
- it is the most fully featured app that I could afford
- it runs on Vista 32bit, W7 64bit and OSX Lion

Sequoia 7.22 here... I paid a small fortune for it in 2003 and have never, ever felt the need to upgrade even once. I doubt I'll ever use anything else.

Having said that... 'mastering' has nothing to do with what software you use. Perhaps a better question would be "what's a good program for editing, compiling, CD authoring etc at the mastering stage".

Rick O'Neil: Version 2.011

Paul Bryant: Version 2.011

Both are fully featured and include an excellent text to speech app as well as an outstanding binaural ear hardware set which is second to none.

Any particular reasons you choose it and not something else?

The hardware that's attached to the software... if you know what I mean!

Or let me put it this way...

If you think using a professional is expensive, just wait until you see how much an amateur can cost you.

That being said, when the wife wants me to use my computer skills to make a compilation cd where each track has a nice crossfade into the next track (we are talking about meditation music) I always reach for the reliable old Wavelab that has served me well for many years. My wife thinks my mastering skills are extraordinary! Lookout Rick you may have competition.

Probably better classified as an outboard interface between the h/w and s/w.....

So we have a Sequoia, a Samplitude and a couple of Wavelabs and a good bit of reticence so far [-(

I use Logic for the editing and audio side of mastering, as It does all I need, I am familiar and quick with the software. I can use my favourite plugins and outboard eq's and comps etc.
I use WaveBurner to compile the tracks fade out /in etc, and burn the master. I usually get my clients CD's manufactured at Regency here in Melbourne and deliver the Master myself and have good communication with them.

I use my trusty old Sadie Artemus for tracking, editing, mixing, mastering and burning. Nearly lost it all due to a failed mother board, but one of my clients had a spare in his garage and got it up and running. Now he gets some free studio time. The new Sadie 6 looks promising as well. Has a great multiband compresser plugin that really does a great job at mastering.
