My Dog Just Cost Me $10K
Last Friday our local Vet told us that Indi our Doverman dog had a perforated abdomen and needed emergency surgery
right away. We picked her up from the Vet paid $890 for the 5hrs she was there and drove to Sydney University where they have a Vet Hospital.
Indi had the operation where we were quoted between $2k to $4k and worst scenario $8k. They found an old paddle pop stick that was probably there for over 12 mths which caused some nasty bacteria to form in her abdomen. She was in critical condition but as the Vet said she was a tuff and strong dog.
Good news Indi has survived the ordeal and is coming home tomorrow with the Vet bills reaching $10K, but if she eats anymore f***en crap like that again she's going to dog heaven.
Christmas will be frugal this year, socks all round.

Wow, I really can't think of a adequate response.
Glad your dog is OK. though, but $10K... that hurts even thinking about it.

Good on you Nic
A smaller person would place their wallet's importance over the life of a dog
I used to take my old guy Bear down to a far south coast country vet, and get to visit family too.
Country vet's are so much less pricey than the city vets - they don't drive Ferrari's

aw nice one Nic.
My wife tells a story about her cat that needed a sex change to survive. 4 grand later.... and then it ran away soon after. I just shake my head.
Let's hope Indi doesn't chew up all of your Christmas socks.

In defence of city vets, a frightening amount of your bill goes to covering their insurance against getting sued by disgruntled pet owners who refuse to accept that it was 100 generations of inbreeding that caused their prized King Charles Spaniel's brain hemorrhage and not the vet. (Not talking out of my arse here, I've seen it from the insurance co side. The premiums can exceed $100K per year).
Rural vets don't get anywhere near as many of these sorts of lawsuits, and their premiums are drastically lower.

What I don't understand about such law suits is why the judge doesn't rule that it was in fact 100 generations of inbreeding that caused their prized King Charles Spaniel's brain hemorrhage and not the vet's negligence. Or is litigation "guilty until proven innocent"? I am not aware that American judgements create a precedent for Australian law. (rant over....maybe)

Thanks everyone.
Our Indi is home now, she looks like shit, has got a big zipper but will pull through. I gave the Doctor a hug for saving her life.
Just over 4years ago I had two days to live and pulled through now our dog has joined the club.

When I read the title, I thought it might be about buying an Avid HDx system.
But seriously, my family and I went through the emotional and financial strain with our cat earlier this year. Had to have him put down... the poor little guy wasn't going to get better. I'm not a dog person, but I feel for you.

Your not going to believe this but my accountant just emailed me with the news I'm getting $11K back from some past tax returns that were late. Hope the fines are not too steep if any.
Wow what a blessing.

That happened to me awhile back. Crashed my car had no money to pay for the damages then a day after the bill came in I got a corporate gig producing the voice announcements for the southern cross train station. Got all the money plus extra in a week. Thank you Lord!

Glad she's ok Nic, really nice pooch Indi. Yeah our old Dane ate a plastic toy, stupid dog, even he knew he was a bloody stupid dog, was expensive also, had to help the vets lift 112KG of silly unconscious dog onto the operating table. He lived about 2 years after that, though had to be put down a few weeks back from old age. All the other dogs are happy as though, they all hated him, was a bit of an old grump sometimes.
Good news on the tax return though.
