Anyone here using a Fet 47 on Kick

Let's talk about kits and mics, new and old. What are you using? What do you want? What's the difference?

I'm using a fet47 clone - the Lawson.
It's great. We use it to fatten the main 'inside' mic.
Place the 47 a few inches from the front head.

Yes, using like Chris a couple of inches outside in front combined with and inside mic, which varies in choice.
Have a cover over the kick to keep some spill out of the 47.
Also love the fet 47 on acoustic guitar and some vocals and cello. Not mega bright, but has great detailed mids, the kind that you can almost reach out and touch.

Yep, usually using a cover to reduce ambient spill here too.

Hi Angus, I don't normally time align, just move the mic and flip polarity till I get a mix of the two mics that sounds good. I'm not really into time aligning drums, I prefer to move mics. Even a tiny move can make a big difference, and will alter the tone better than eq'ing.

Yeah, we don't move any audio.
The FET just adds body underneath. Softens the attack and fills out the low end. It just sneaks in under the main mic.

I have the T3 on order. Well, on Lay-by, so will be about a month or so before it arrives. Just enough time to line that drum wall with Bush Rocks I've collected from the neighbouring properties.

i use an sm91 in the drum, a heil PR40 (or audix D6) in the hole, out of the hole or 3-6" from the skin AND a fet 47...

i use one, 2 or a blend of all 3. sometimes i slip them in time, sometimes not...

Ive never found the Fet47 great on Kick - its usuable at a distance - and just OK up close.
I had a really good one for about 6 years, and everytime I put it up on anything, it was dumped for something better.
Over rated mic's - so many better Neumanns.
Its strange that you mainly hear of people using it on kick drum these days - not a sign of a versatile mic.
Try them on elec or acoustic guitars/vocals/piano/vibrophone? - YUK
Expensive kick mic....

I have never used one.. but that was always my line of thinking, thats a lot of money for a kick mic...and financially short of a lotto win, out of my reach.. still would love to try it... just once.. 8)

I use a rode classic 2 often close on the kick.
I like being able to vary the pattern to vary my
Bass respone and the amount of ride that spills in if they smash them.
I guess it's still an expensive kick mic, but it works for me.

Hi Guys,
I generally use a Sony C500 out front. Adds body like nothing I've heard. Love it.

Oh man i want an old sony mic. Only got to use the 38b on mono overhead/room once but LOVED the sound. What the 500's like Mat?

only time used a fet was a session I assisted on but had great results..
Used a m88 on inside (sounded quite thin but think that was the engineer not caring to much nor moving to suit) & a fet 47 on the outside, 6" from the head bang in the middle. Fet sounded great! Had a bit of click to it as well but tons of booooom. Was on a 26" ludwig so that may have had something to do with the giant kick sound! Spill wasn't that much of a worry as when mixed in/careful eq'ing didn't notice it.

setup i like atm for rock kicks:
- d6 inside kick about 8" from beater head bang on axis
- m88n just inside the hole pointing just off axis to the beater
- subkick 2" from outer head, off axis to center

sounds killer! sub nearly always needs flipping though.
