Drummers shark cage. Love it.
Every studio should have one.
Is the crane hanging around for long Chris?

Crane is being used a few times.
This was the first test in a pool - fresh water.

Performance on Wed evening

Congrats Chris you mad bastard! You pulled it off. Sounded so very cool, and unlike anything. Sounded better than on Monday. Vibe was killer as Tina was being lowered in. Would have liked to have a drink with you after but the place was crawling with MoFo's. Thanks for letting me be around it. Rob, you're Hydraphone was the business in our murky Derwent.

Re: Recording a drumkit under water..
Thanks Mr T
It was a great success - everyone was blown away with how amazing the kit sounded underwater.
It sounded like a electro industrial / fluid watery pounding soundscape, almost like it was in a massive nightclub - so much amazingly cool huge bottom end stuff was swirling in and out. Water swilrling in between drum hits, some stuff sounded like it was backwards. Cymbals sounded like big pieces of metal.
A totally rewarding experience!

Thank you Rob!!!!
It was a total pleasure massaging and hearing something that no ears have ever heard before.
Mission accomplished.

That's what sounded really interesting about it I reckon.
Ride cymbal sounded like a 30ft metal tank being struck!

Wiz - I'll have a chat with the powers that be, and see if I can post a small segment up here.

Re: This is what it sounds like..
OK - I have a MP3 small grab of the gig posted up on Proharmonic website (thanks Rob).
http://www.proharmonic.com/Underwater.htm
Here is a pic of the kit - note the Hydrophone hanging on the left.
Wires going through the drumshells plus (siliconed on) bug mic's on all top drumskins, under ride and hat mics with condoms.
....hear how crazy trashy a kit sounds out of the water - as to be expected on a $400 kit that had already been under twice - and also because the drums were sealed 5 hours prior, the condensation pressure from inside the wet shells made the skins push out over the afternoon prior to the gig - like a long way out, so the floortom was higher pitched than the rack tom by the time the gig started! I could not detune it as I would have broken the silicon seal between the bearing edges and the skins.
The cymbal and ride mic's died over the progression of dunkings - so they were half dead on the day - and completely died during the gig - I think the diaphragms on these particular mics were not up to the pressure
...all this crazy unexpected stuff happened as one would expect.
My lesson - its always all about mic placement - even underwater
Enjoy

Re: Recording a drumkit under water..
Taking some inspiration from this yesterday seein as I didn't need big rooms for the drums I decided to use some 57s in condoms as stereo room mics. It didn't sounds as cool as Chris' submerged kit but it worked well for the song an more or less sounded like drums the spring verb in a space echo but a bit smoother.

Re: Recording a drumkit under water..
Just had a read other this post, and this is incredible! I'm blown away that it was able to be pulled off, and the sound was quite astonishing! Especially that ride, might have to relocate some of my recordings to the water.
