What did you build with Rick's transformers?

We did promise a little show and tell, so I'll get things rolling....

For my guitar pedal board, I wanted an "all in one" output box that had sig in, main out, split out (to a headphone amp) and a DI out. When you think about it, thats just a normal DI with an extra split out. So I dug out a moderate quality DI I had lying around, added in the extra output (the solder pads were already there waiting for me!) and replaced the small transformer (front left) with a gem from Rick - a hand wound Jensen JE10KB 4.1:1, which delivers a lot more bandwidth and magic than the stock. The DI already came with ground lift and a switchable 0db/10db/20db pad, so all in all a nice outcome.

My projects are moving a little slower, but I am enjoying it thoroughly!

Yesterday I finished the front panel metalwork. It isn't perfect, it it came out pretty alright.
Two belclere's were used in two of the 34128 modules that were missing them. They are all good to go now though.
Next up is wiring the phantom power switches and mounting rails for the edge connectors.


Does anyone have any insight on:

- enclosure "codes" or the likes? 8u rack enclosures aren't common! I was just going basically build it in the rack case with a back panel on a hinge for easy access... But I am unsure if its a frowned upon practise.

- grounding. Star or buss? The 542 used a large buss bar for ground in which each channel was separately star grounded to. Should I follow a similar approach? Or because its not being used as a mixing desk, should I just star ground everything to the one point?

...and Rick's Lundahl 4901 transformers being put to use in a bo hansen DI. A little bit of improv and everything fits snug in a small jaycar enclosure. I have 1 more to build still.

I just finished wiring two of the four Dyne output transformers from Rick into my rack of Altec 1588C preamps.
I was intending to put all 4 in, but initial tests suggested that whilst the difference was subtle, it's worth having some channels with and some without transformers. The Dyne's are INCREDIBLY clean transformers, and I'm not able to hear or measure any breakup even if I send some pretty huge levels into them, but from my very quick tests they do add a little thickness down the bottom which sounds great, as well as a touch of sheen up higher on acoustic guitars. On vocals or bandwidth limited instruments I couldn't pick which channels have transformers in a blind test.
Very keen to hear them on drums.


Bit of a messy wiring job but I'll see if I can get some pics up soon.
