I love this..

"Eyes Like the Sky"
They recorded it themselves with Mboxs and sm57's, it sounds great in a lo fi way and is totally compelling.

Glad you liked Miriam Lieberman's CD, Bob. I recorded most of it and mixed it.
It's a really nice album.
Pity we couldn't bring the whole band down to SA. Maybe next time.

I'd be pretty pumped if I'd worked with BS&T. Been a favourite band of mine since I was a kid. Their version of Sympathy for the Devil is the definitive and makes the Stones seem pretty twee... (I have now put my flame suit on and will be impervious to all attempts to change my mind).

Thanks Paul, I had been working in a club in Nashville prior to going out on the road with these guys and we regularly did live broadcasts to a local FM radio station via 15k phone lines. I got pretty good at using the Auxes as my broadcast mix. And in the case of BS&T, it was pretty easy when you've got musicians who understand dynamics and mic technique.
Here's another one from that same night
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vQhY6plZpkU

Myles, I too was a big fan growing up. I remember hearing Fire and Rain by BS&T before I heard James Taylor. Honestly thought JT was doing a cover. The BST version is so much more painful and powerful. We didn't do Sympathy for the Devil in this set, but here's the greatest hits medley for you. Enjoy

This is some pretty amazing footage of The Faces live at the BBC. It sounds fantastic.
I can't see any P.A. anywhere, no monitors on the floor or stacks to be seen, yet nobody seems to be struggling for level. Most of the time Rod isn't even that close to the mic. Even when he stands right next to the drums, the sound of the drums hardly changes. As far as I can see there are three mics on the drums. Two low overheads and a kick.
How the hell did they do this??
This is the kind of live to air sound I aspire to. Tight enough, clean enough, powerful, effortless but plainly live.
Love it.
Cheers,
Paul

Paul,
I wasn't there, so I'm only guessing, but its a combination of factors that makes this sound good.
1. Good musicians playing good songs. Guitar, bass and keyboard amps were probably on "2" not 10. And a drummer that knows pianisimo from forte.
2. Good acoustic space to record in. (I don't know which BBC studio this was shot in, but I'd be willing to bet that it was heavily treated and dead quiet {with lighting that didn't make noise})
3. Minimal PA. Probably some bookshelf speakers in the grid above the audience. And probably only the vocal mic feeding them. No foldback supplied, so the musicians balanced themselves during rehearsals so every one could hear
4. Minimal processing and effects. Probably no more than 12 inputs, mixed in mono with no compressors, limited eq (maybe 3 bands) and minimal reverb (if any)(maybe an EMT plate or an echo room elsewhere in the building). Probably mixed live to video tape, no multi-tracking, no mix-down, no post mixing.
5. Attentive audience that listened and kept quiet.

Once you get all that right, it is actually quite easy to pull a good mix (been there, done that) and such a joy too.

I'll ask a friend who is ex BBC (although not old enough to have been a part of this crew) if he can shed some insight.

My 2 cents

As promised, I recieved a response from Tim Davies:
(as a side. I suspect the desk shown had "reverse" faders as was the way with the BBC. You "pulled" the sound towards you)

"It was almost certainly recorded in TVC in one of the smaller studios. So the desk would have been either a mono Neve with discrete components, or a BBC made type D http://www.orbem.co.uk/typed/3e.htm Any "processing" would have been a couple of compressor limiters in the groups, these were bookable and pluggable, NOT in the desk!

It would have been a straight to VT, live mix. The BBC didn't really have any regular multitrack facilities back then, and would have been recorded to an Ampex quadraplex machine.

Interestingly Rod is using an AKG omni vocal mic, a very typical BBC thing, because of the lack of bass tip up on an omni!! Never mind spill from monitors!! I suspect the overall volume was a lot less than we would expect today which would help.

The real answer as to why it was such a great mix lies not with the equipment, but the man who mixed it...the legendary Hugh Barker. A great bloke and a fabulous mixer responsible for many fantastic mixes over many genres but mainly in Light Entertainment. He had a "commercial sound" that was unusual in the BBC who definitely had their own way of thinking things should be done. Hugh is still alive, and enjoying his retirement."

Thanks a lot, really great information. pretty much what I expected to hear. All live, low volume, omni mics. Mix straight to VT. When a band can play together and balance themselves, it's a beautiful thing and doesn't require much work to sound good. Just hands on faders and musical sensitivity from the engineer.
I'm not sure what is meant by "limiters in the groups, these were bookable and pluggable, NOT in the desk!"
Does that mean the engineer would have to book access to the limiters and patch them to the groups?
Cheers,
Paul

The only song (I know of) to be #1 in 3 consecutive decades - always loved the "Decca" sound and (imo) this band set the standard for studio quality for years to come. Hard to believe it was 1967......

Not enough disco getting talked about.

Was driving in this morning and 99.3 played "No More tears (Enough is Enough)" - Donna Summer and Barbara Streisand.

Oh my, oh my. The performing and production on that song is just incredible.

What wouldn't I give to have singers like that in my studio. Or the horn section, or the rhythm section (Neil Stubenhaus and James Gadson).

just popped on to post this album from '71, by Felt...

far out...new bands need to just study shit like this, just to work out if they've tried hard enough....this is so perfect. I cant seem to find out if they have any more albums!!! oh...and to add insult to injury, no one in this band is older than 19.... shame!!!!
