Cleaning Out Battery Acid

Postby Lee » Tue Sep 17, 2013 9:33 pm

Hi Guys I have just purchased something that needs to have battery acid cleaned out of the battery compartment and off the coils. There are three D battery sized spots. I have contact cleaner and WD40 and cotton buds. Am I on the right track or is there a better way? Once it's all restored I will post some photos.

Would I be correct in assuming it's too hard to remove the affected item/s and wash them in soapy water?
It's actually an alkali that leaks out of batteries, I'd be tempted to use a mild vinegar solution to make sure it's neutralised, then flushing with lots of water. Of course if there are electronic parts that are too hard to remove this is probably not practical.

Take with a large pinch of salt...

my favourite electronic cleaning solution is Electrolube AFC Aqueous Foam Cleanser, available from WES Components for under $10 for a 400Gm can. I've removed boards from our on Air consoles that have had a full cup of sugary coffee spilt in them and washed them , dried them, then used compressed air to blow all the water out, then leave in a sealed bag/box with silica gel or rice for a week.
Put them back in and all worked fine
