Anyone watching the new version of this?

Whatever else, it's nice to see Kylie back on local t.v. :)

I saw about 2 mins of it last night, I was surfing channels( i watch a very small amount of TV) and saw it was on, so I stop.

I agree it was good to see Kylie...she looked healthy and happy.

I must be getting too old.

I just thought it was ridiculous.

All the judges were carrying on whilst listening, I guess its showmanship and meant to be entertaining, perhaps it is and I am the problem...

I kept channel surfing

Round 2 last night I thought was more entertaining - a good bit of banter between the judges.

I thought John Farnham had retired from touring.

That's what this thread is about, right?

A girl I've done a lot of work with is currently on this show (her blind audition has not screened yet) and I've been to a few of the filmings. It's not a singing show, it's a reality TV show and a great back story is as important as the vocal skills (2 vocalists being equal, the better back story will win through). I respect the guts it takes to get up before an audience and TV cameras and do this stuff, and regardless of how good or not they are, how good or not the show is, they all have my respect for the courage to give it a go. The Voice set, in the old District Pavilion at Moore Park (Fox Studios) is a stunning piece of equipment - around 200 crew on hand for each session. Talk about a budget.....

Exactly.
I've been saying this for years.
The Block has very little to do with construction, and Master Chef has very little to do with owning/running a successful restaurant.

I'm watching as I know some people in it.
I record it and fast forward through all the boring bits to the actual performances. You can watch the whole one and a half hour show in about half an hour. It's really annoying in all these reality shows how after every ad break they spend 5 mins re-capping what you've just seen. Do they think all their viewers suffer from dementia?
The backstory formula gets a bit tedious - find tragedy in the performer's lives and exploit it mercilessly.
Having said all that, some of the performances are excellent, the band is kickass (great to hear a live band on the auditions this time) and the feedback is always encouraging.

yes... it's all about the ratings! and I agree it's not a singing show, just like the block isn't a reno show... they only care about the drama as it means more viewers and therefore more $$$!!!
I worked on the Today Show this morning and it's alllll based around The Voice. I didn't watch the show last night and didn't need to as they showed the top performances at least 5 times throughout the morning.....

....ok the Voice was on last night so I went out to what I think is the antithesis of the Voice........
The movie was All Is Lost with Robert Redford as the only character in a shipwreck movie having about two short lines of dialogue in the whole movie......was a great movie. I was emersed in the soundscape. Had a light meal and a large glass of red before i got there..... a chock top as I walked in ..... and it was a great nights entertainment for $10 :ar!

The upside is that they are employing a heap of Oz sound guys and musicians, the downside is that it is exploiting the performers. All in all a balance, of sorts.

At the end of the "blind audition" phase a few things struck me......

- this year's judges seem to have a lot more friendly banter between one another
- some of the contestants are arrogant sobs - I felt really sorry for Kylie with one ungracious dude
- the judges know the songs quite well to the extent of singing along and hitting the accents etc

I was most surprised that someone didn't pick the operatic singer last night - she had a great voice and wasn't out of place singing what Pavarotti was famous for - I mean, it's called "the voice", not the "only a pop song voice"

Yes it's a bit weird that. A good voice is a good voice. In the second half of the blind auditions it's all about the 'strategy' of the judge's teams, so they don't turn for an amazing singer because they don't feel they fit into their team.
Also, I now have more sympathy for the contestants - I did a gig last night with Mitchell Anderson who was a finalist last year. He told me for his blind audition he had to be there at 7am and then didn't perform till midnight. He was sick for the next 2 weeks.

It's an important show for the network.
Nothing is left to chance.
I wouldn't be surprised if the likely finalists are already earmarked after the first audition.
You don't want a couple of vanilla, boring characters, albeit incredible singers, featuring in the last two weeks. You want the girl who is a single mother on welfare. The guy who lost his twin sister a couple of years ago and has dedicated his performances to her.
The judging would be entirely scripted. Ratings starting to slide? Concoct a rift between two judges. Manufacture a Twitter storm, and have the 'fight' covered by Richard Wilkins on 9's breakfast show, and headline news on 9's web homepage.
The judges only have a job if the show is relevant. 'Relevant' for the channel is pulling in ratings and advertising dollars.
The whole thing is based on the 'water cooler' moment each episode.

I can't believe they kicked off the Tasmanian guy with tatts and the broadway show voice......

Can anyone tell me what the desk is in their studio?

And that wireless stage mic sounds like dookie - when you hear the singers in the studio (U87?) then on stage the difference is awful.

And Kylie at Metropolis - pretty flash setup:
