DCB Cables... Roll my own, or Anyone got a spare :)

Postby harry » Tue Aug 26, 2014 10:19 pm

Hey Guys,

I'm on the hunt for a DCB cable (both directions - all pins soldered) in case anyone has one lying about.

If not, could anyone of our synth nerds confirm if the plug is a male 14 pin centronics type connector?... perhaps something like this: (the photo shows a plug with more pins)

(gonna try and roll my own as kenton sell them for 47.25 pounds + 26pounds to ship... $130AUD... for a cable.... faark)

Harry,

I think I've got a DCB cable lying around that I made years ago.

If not, I have about 40 DCB connectors that I bought off eBay ages ago.

If you end up making one, make sure you pay attention to all the grounds. A fault in mine caused all sorts of digital hash to be audible on the output of the Jupiter 8.

I posted six connectors to Harry. Hopefully all is well in DCB land.

Thanks guys,

Hopefully this info sorts out the wiring of..

http://www.chd-el.cz/index.php?id=93

according to this - if i want a loopback cable, then i only need 7 pins connected for a Juno 60.... Certainly no Jupiter here..

So Adam, will i be connecting the 'shield' to pin 4 at both ends 'or' pin 4 to pin 4 and the shield connected to both metal plugs?

What cable would you use?

Hmm, my recollection was a bit faulty - I thought there was both an analogue and a digital ground, but it looks like there is just one.
I checked your link against some old Roland service printouts I have regarding DCB connections, and they seem to tally.
In fact, you could get away with just 4 wires if you only need control in one direction, say from your converter box/MD8/OP8 to the Juno 60 and not the other way round.
i.e. on the transmission side you'd connect pins # 7, 6, 5, 4 to the receive side pins # 3, 2, 1, 4 respectively, and yes, connect both pins # 4 to each other via the shield if you have one, but I've used flat ribbon cable successfully.
