double garage size room wood floors 8 foot high ceiling= lots of echo.
Is there a practical way to make it usable for recording and listening.
Seems to be so many products and DIY solutions,where to start.

.....hi Colin, my advise is in no way exact or profesionalbut it's free. Empty the room will sound shit so a few large carpet squers ....or rectangles would be a good start but not wall to wall. The main objectives for starters will be to dampen the reflections a bit, add some diffusion, and add some bass traps and absorbers. 8 foot is low for the ceiling so some diffusion on the ceiling between the speakers and listening position. Build a bass trap floor to ceiling in each corner of the wall where the speakers are near of all four corners if u think it's needed. Add a few couches and may be a book shelf or two to break up the flat wall surface. Heavy curtains over windows....you can open if needed. Hang a few broad band absorbers on the walls, these can be covered with a tapestry, or cloth that suits your decor. I noticed last time i was at the Jetstar terminal at Tullamarine they had hung accoustic absober bats fron their edge from the rather low ceiling so they hung vertical, sone hanging north south, the others east west. This works very well in that setting.
