anyone using Proac 100's in oz?

Postby Matt_Gio » Tue Jul 07, 2015 8:20 pm

these are so popular, but I never see anyone in Oz using them.
I am curious for some feedback on them

massively tossing up between a pair of these and going all out for some ATC 25's

anyone?

I've got a set - love em to death. Took a while to get use to them as they're certainly not a 'forward' sounding speaker in any sense of the word but rather very neutral and smooth. They tell you instantly if you're over eq-ing, compressing & if there's any nasties going on in the mix.

I pair mine with a Bryston 9b (run my ns10s off the same amp), only other amps i've tested them on was a Pereaux 3000b & Crown D150. Bryston won hands down. Would love to hear them on a 4b SST though.

Pretty sure Peter Holz & another gent Darren (unsure of last name) on here has a set too.

I ended up getting mine thru vintage king and shipping them here.

Pete Holz has a pair and a Bryston 4B. We had a studio together for a couple of years. I miss the speakers more than him ;)

I've had a pair for about 5-6 years now and am very happy.

I believe that Pro-Ac has discontinued the Studio 100 but they will make them as a special order. Don't quote me on that however.

I bought mine direct from Aus distributor (RVM) and they beat the special that Vintage King was doing at that time.

Incredible speaker, I'll always have them front and centre unless I buy SCM25a's or MM27's which might be a while off....

Mine are on a Bryston 4B NRB which is the predecessor to the ST and SST range.
Proac say 30-150W and the 4B is 250W(continuous) so there is a high chance of killing them.
I run inline fuses just to be safe.
As I usually find, passive loud speakers sound a lot better when the amp is well overrated for them and only really operating at about 50% of it's potential. The speakers always sound like they're being damped by the amp much better, not resonating and there is always huge headroom to reproduce transients well.

If you can get a pair buy them. The only way I can describe them is that they are like NS-10's without the mid push and they go a bit lower and higher. Not hyped, honest and very listenable for long periods.

absolutely,

I wouldn't really think of certain speakers being more suited towards certain production styles.

I do anything with them including a lot of fully electronic and sample based productions and always have a smile.

Maybe the only thing is that they probably aren't going to give you that big 'feeling' of bass that a large main or subwoofer augmented system will.

What they do give is a very tight, controlled and honest low end. But don't get me wrong, they still pack a serious punch down there!
